Understanding

Contemporary Art

Introduction
There are various kinds of art forms; traditional
art, abstract art and modern art being some
them. These days contemporary art is catching
up as more and more artists have started to
experiment with their style of art and designing.
They are also using art as a medium to evoke
the rational thinking of people and convey
messages. Contemporary art is all about such
stuff.

Contemporary
Art
The art which is being done
at present, in current times
can generally be referred to
as contemporary art. It is
the art which continues to
be created during our
lifetimes. It is something
that is contemporary to us.
This is, of course, the
laymans definition. Experts
have a different stand on
contemporary art.

Modern Art vs
Contemporary
Art
Modern art is art form that
emerged with the arrival of
impressionists in 1880s to
something that continued till
1960s and 70s. Contemporary
art is everything that has
happened after the 1970s.
Contemporary art has a lot
more artists than modern art.

A Movement Less Art

Form?
While modern art form has a lot of categories,
sub divisions and movements, contemporary art
covers a huge variety of issues. It can be said
that the topics of contemporary paintings are
more
socially
conscious
that
others.
Globalization, bureaucracy, capitalism, feminism,
child labour etc. are some of the topics that are
very well covered by contemporary paintings.

A Postmodern
Movement
There is a very famous notion of
artistic
pluralism
between
contemporary artists. It means that a
single artist is influenced by more than
one styles, techniques and intentions. It
is very well known that art evolves with
time
unlike
anything
else.
Contemporary paintings are
an
evidence of the evolution of art with
time.

Medium is not just

Restricted to Canvas
If you have ever visited a contemporary museum,
then you must have observed art pieces such as
sculptures, statues or other visual art (other than
contemporary paintings of course). Point being,
contemporary art is not just restricted to paintings.
An artist can use anything, any material and any
medium to create a contemporary masterpiece.

Famous Contemporary
Artists
A lot of contemporary artists are credited with
coming up with significant new concepts,
theories or techniques. Their works fetch huge
sums of money and they are an inspiration to
upcoming and young artists. Jean-Michel
Basquiat, Takashi Murakami, Frank Stella.
Mathew Barney, Vito Acconci, Gerhard Richter,
Anish Kapoor etc. are some of the very well
known contemporary artists.

Famous Contemporary Art

Pieces
Some famous contemporary art have redefined art
of the century we live in. Louise Bourgeois' "I Do,
Undo, Redo", Dario Robleto's "Caught in Man's
Amnesia", Ron English's "MC Supersized" are some
art pieces that have references of pop culture.
Kehinde Wiley's "Napoleon Leading the Army over
the Alps" and Julie Mehretu's "Black City"are one of
the most iconic contemporary paintings of the
current times.

Indian Contemporary
Art
In the recent times, Indian contemporary paintings and
art has left a deep impact on the global art fraternity.
The usage of paints, exquisite brush strokes and
techniques is quite unique in Indian contemporary
paintings. A lot of artists such as V.V. Swamy and M.F.
Hussain have been celebrated for their beautiful
contribution to the world of contemporary art.

Conclusi
on
A
painting
speaks
a
thousand words. Using the
artistic
freedom
that
contemporary art movement
has given to the artisans, we
can
surely
expect
a
paradigm shift in the world
of visual art. Contemporary
paintings will continue to
inspire the generation of
artists to come.
