GPS

What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System

(GPS) is a satellite-based
navigation system made up of a
network of 24 satellites placed into
orbit by the U.S. department of
Defense.
HISTORY

Design – US Department Of Defense

Official name – Navigation Satellite Timing & Ranging

First GPS Satellite launched in 1978

By 1990 GPS fully operational – 24 Satellites

Originally used for Military applications

In 1980’s the government made the system available

for civilian use

SEGMENTS OF GPS
3 Segments of GPS :

Space segment - The Satellites

Control segment - Ground Station

User Segment - You & Your Receiver

DEPT. OF COMPUTER ENGG. 4

Space segment
At least 24 GPS space vehicles(SVs).

Satellites orbit the earth in 12 hrs.

6 orbital planes inclined at 55 degrees

 with the equator.

This constellation provides 5 to 8 SVs

 from any point on the earth.

Satellites transmit low power radio

 signals

DEPT. OF COMPUTER ENGG. 5

Control Segment:

comprises of 5 stations

measure the distances of overhead satellites every 1.5 seconds

Send corrected
 data to master control

Satellite orbit, clock performance ,need for repositioning determined

Information sent to 3 uplink stations.

DEPT. OF COMPUTER ENGG. 6

User Segment

Simply consists of you & your receiver

Users can be boaters, pilots, hunters , hikers etc…

GPS receivers detect, decode and process the signals

received from the satellites.

Receiver used with computer software to output

info to the user in the form of a map.

Can be unlimited users at one time.

PRINCIPLE

rks on TRIANGULATION principle

east 3 satellites required to calculate position.

ere are at least 6 satellites visible at any place

n the earth

Advantages of GPS

Precision timing capability

Highly accurate

Provide emergency road side assistance

Finding places in your own area become easier

Disadvantages of GPS

GPS receiver cannot be used in closed places

A GPS receiver with advanced features may cost 200$

Uses of GPS Technology

• Location- determining a basic position.

• Navigation - getting from one location to another.

• Tracking - monitoring the movement of people and things.

• Mapping- creating maps.

• Timing - providing precise timing .

Application of GPS Technology:
Car GPS System

• exactly positions the

car , then check it
with a map like
Google Earth.
• Alarm SMS sent to car
owner's mobile phone
and the center if the
car is shocked, or car
door is opened, or
engine is started, or
the car's power is cut
off illegally.

GPS for Motor bikers

user-friendly control,
touch-screen panel
Detachable Bicycle GPS System

• State-of-the-art
satellites in space
tracking your every
terrestrial move

• lets you know exactly
how far you've
travelled, how fast, how

high, how low and

where you are now!

GPS Wrist
watch
Displays runner’s
speed, distance,
pace, time, laps in
large display

 Charts your
route as you run
or walk, and can
point you back
to start

GPS Fish
Positioning
System
be attached
externally or
implanted into fish.

allows the scientist

to track the
migratory route of
the fish through a
whole year cycle

A SLR camera
having GPS
unit

Gives instant and

truly detailed location
information for a
photographic image

allows automatic geo-
tagging of useful geo-
data such as country,
city, street and point
of interest

AIRCRAFT
tells the pilot where
they are headed, how
far away they are from
the destination, as well
as the height of the
plane

GPS System in boats

Very specific information

related to the sea beds,
navigable channels and
other useful maritime
data allows boat captains
to navigate safely.

Real Time Train Predictive
Arrival GPS System

Large digital message

boards at train
stations will tell riders
exactly when the next
train will arrive at the
platform
Buses that use
GPS System:
The GPS coordinates

are beamed to the

smart stop which
announces when the
next bus will arrive.
GPS System to be Available in
Children’s Shoes
set up alerts if the wearer of
the device wanders outside
or inside of a designated
area.

 military troop tracking,

elderly care, law
enforcement, personal
exercise monitoring, and
even uses in sports training

GPS device can tag
your teenager
size of a large matchbox

 exactly pinpoints a
carrier’s location through a
global positioning system
accessed by computer or
mobile phone.

A GPS device for
your dogs & pets

The system linked to a

GPS-enabled collar for

your dog which helps
us to locate it.
Conclusion:

GPS is now being used across the world, the
list of uses is only set by the requirements
we can think of applying GPS, and we find
it being used more and more in our daily
lives. So it would be extremely hard to
perform many travel and industry tasks
without it.
