Second conditional

What is a conditional?
It is a sentence or part of a sentence expresses a
condition. Usually begins with the words
"When", "if" and "unless".
A condition is what must happen before
otherwise might occur.

Example the conditions

They will come if they have
enought time.

He would tell me if he knew.

Example the conditions

They will come when i call
them.

Unless she agrees to pay us we

will not take the job.

There are 4 conditional in English, there are 4

ways to express that something depends on
another thing.
This presentation will discuss only "second
Conditional ".

SECOND
CONDITIONAL

The second conditional has two possible uses:

It is used to talk about things in the future that
probably will not be real, for example Wishes and
dreams.
Example:
If I won the lottery, I would buy a car.

2. We also use this conditional to talk about

something in the mind that is impossible,
something that is not real.
Example:
If I were you, I would travel around the world.

Structure
There are two possible structures to form this type of
Conditional
1. If+ condition + result:
If +
+ verb in past simple +
complement (condition clause)

+ Would + verb in infinitive +

complement (result clause)

If I won a 2 million dollars

I would travel around the world.

If I met him again

I would thel him the truth

Also you can use the modal "could" and "Might" in the
main ream.

2. Result + if + condition
+ Would + verb in infinite +
complement ( result clause)

If +
+ verb in past simple +
complement (condition clause)

He would quiet school

If her parents agreed.

I would be surprised

If I saw pigs in the sky.

Negative
To make a negative conditional we can use two
different structures. The first would be to deny
the verbs normally.
If +
+ didnt+ verb in
infinitive + complement
(condition clause)

+ Wouldnt + verb in
infinitive + complement (result
clause)

If I didnt win the lottery

I wouldnt buy a house

As we can see from the example, simply refused

phrases.
Remember that the two may be denied or only one
of them.

However, we can also use 'UNLESS' followed by

the verb
in the affirmative, with the same meaning.
Unless +
+ verb in past simple
+ complement (condition clause)

+ Wouldnt + verb in
infinitive + complement (result
clause)

Unless I won the lottery

I wouldnt buy a house

Interrogative
The second conditional questions usually appear,
as this can ask for imaginary assumptions.

Question word+ would +

+verb
in infinitive + complement
What would you do

If +

+ verb in past simple +

complement + ?
If you won the lottery?

Examples the second conditional

If I had more friends I wouldnt live alone.

If you spoke more languages, youd have more

foreign friends.

If she loved me more, I wouldnt leave her.

If we didnt talk so much, we would do more

work.

If I wrote the story of my life no one would

believe it.
