What is a conditional?
It is a sentence or part of a sentence expresses a
condition. Usually begins with the words
"When", "if" and "unless".
A condition is what must happen before
otherwise might occur.
SECOND
CONDITIONAL
Structure
There are two possible structures to form this type of
Conditional
1. If+ condition + result:
If +
+ verb in past simple +
complement (condition clause)
Also you can use the modal "could" and "Might" in the
main ream.
2. Result + if + condition
+ Would + verb in infinite +
complement ( result clause)
If +
+ verb in past simple +
complement (condition clause)
I would be surprised
Negative
To make a negative conditional we can use two
different structures. The first would be to deny
the verbs normally.
If +
+ didnt+ verb in
infinitive + complement
(condition clause)
+ Wouldnt + verb in
infinitive + complement (result
clause)
+ Wouldnt + verb in
infinitive + complement (result
clause)
Interrogative
The second conditional questions usually appear,
as this can ask for imaginary assumptions.
If +
Conversation
Peter: What would you buy if you had 10000 dollars in
vouchers to spend?
Paul: Vouchers for which store?
Peter:I dont know probably a big department store like
liverpool or somewhere like that
Paul:Well, if you gave me all those vouchers Id definitely go
on a shopping binge. But I think the first thing would be
lots of delicious gourmet food?
Peter: Groceries isnt that a bit boring?
Paul: No, its just that finally Id be able to buy all those
luxury things you say are too expensive.
Peter: Like what?
Paul:If I had 10,000 dollars you would buy all clothes.
