HISTORY
Bharti Airtel Ltd is one of the world's leading providers
of telecommunication services with presence in 19
countries including India & South Asia and Africa. The
company is the largest wireless service provider in
India, based on the number of customers. The company
offers an integrated suite of telecom solutions to its
enterprise customers, in addition to providing long
distance
connectivity
both
nationally
and
internationally. The Company also offers Digital TV and
IPTV Services. All these services are rendered under a
unified brand 'airtel' either directly or through
subsidiary companies.

HISTORY

The company operates in four strategic business units,


namely Mobile, Telemedia, Enterprise and Digital TV. The
mobile business offers services in India, Sri Lanka and
Bangladesh. The Telemedia business provides broadband,
IPTV and telephone services in 95 Indian cities. The Digital
TV business provides Direct-to-Home TV services across
India. The Enterprise business provides end-to-end telecom
solutions to corporate customers and national and
international long distance services to telcos.
The company also deploys, owns and manages passive
infrastructure pertaining to telecom operations under their
subsidiary Bharti Infratel Ltd. Bharti Infratel Ltd own 42% of
Indus Towers Ltd. Bharti Infratel Ltd and Indus Towers Ltd
are the largest passive infrastructure service providers for
telecom
services
in
India.

HISTORY

Bharti Airtel Ltd was incorporated on July 7, 1995 with the


name Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd. The company was promoted by
Bharti Telecom Ltd, a company incorporated under the laws of
India. The name of the company was changed from Bharti
Tele-Ventures to Bharti Airtel Ltd with effect from April 24,
2006 in order to reflect their brand essence, objective and the
nature of their business activities.
In 1984,Sunil Mittalstarted assembling push-button phones
in India,which he earlier used to import from a Taiwan
company, Kingtel, replacing the old fashioned, bulkyrotary
phonesthat were in use in the country then. Bharti Telecom
Limited (BTL) was incorporated and entered into a technical
tie up with Siemens AG of Germany for manufacture of
electronic push button phones. By the early 1990s, Bharti was
making fax machines, cordless phones and other telecom
gear. He named his first push-button phones as 'Mitbrau'

HISTORY

In 1992, he successfully bid for one of the four mobile


phone network licences auctioned in India.One of the
conditions for the Delhi cellular license was that the
bidder have some experience as a telecom operator.
So, Mittal clinched a deal with the French telecom
group
Vivendi.
He
was
one
of
the
first
Indianentrepreneursto identify the mobile telecom
business as a major growth area. His plans were finally
approved by the Government in 1994and he launched
services inDelhiin 1995, when Bharti Cellular Limited
(BCL) was formed to offer cellular services under the
brand name AirTel. Within a few years Bharti became
the first telecom company to cross the 2-million mobile
subscriber mark. Bharti also brought down the STD/ISD
cellular rates in India under brand name 'Indiaone'.

HISTORY

In 1999, Bharti Enterprises acquired control of JT


Holdings, and extended cellular operations to
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In 2000, Bharti
acquired control of Skycell Communications, in
Chennai. In 2001, the company acquired control of
Spice Cell in Calcutta. Bharti Enterprises went public
in 2002, and the company was listed on Bombay
Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of
India. In 2003, the cellular phone operations were
rebranded under the single Airtel brand. In 2004,
Bharti acquired control of Hexacom and entered
Rajasthan. In 2005, Bharti extended its network to
Andaman and Nicobar. This expansion allowed it to
offer voice services all across India.

HISTORY

In January 2011, the company and State Bank of


India (SBI) entered into a Joint Venture (JV)
agreement to make available banking services to
India's unbanked millions. The newly formed entity,
will harness the power of State Bank's strengths and
airtel's mobile telephony to add value to the banking
and financial services sector and empower millions
of financially excluded in the country to enhance
their livelihood and quality of life. The Joint Venture
will become the Business Correspondent of SBI and
offer banking products and services at affordable
cost to the citizens in unbanked and other areas.

In March 2014, Bharti Airtel's business-to-business


service arm has partnered France-based Orange
Business Services to allow their customers connect
with each other for video conferencing facility."Airtel
Managed Video Conference customers will be able to
collaborate with the Orange customers and vice-versa
with an ease that is comparable to making a telephone
call, not only within India but even at international
locations," Airtel Business' Chief Product Officer Argha
Basu told PTI.This is first ever B2B deal of Orange with
an Indian company in video conferencing space.While
there are many free web-based video conferencing
solutions available in the market, the large
multinational companies prefer to use dedicated audiovideo conferencing facility for their business needs
