INTRODUCT
ION

Organic farming is the form of agriculture

that relies on techniques such as crop rotation,
green manure, compost and biological pest
control to maintain soil productivity and
control pests on a farm.

Organic agriculture is a production system that

sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and
people.
Organic agriculture combines tradition,
innovation and science to benefit the shared
environment and promote fair relationships and a
good quality of life for all involved.
Organic farming also involves:
careful use of water resources
good animal husbandry

OBJECTIVES OF
ORGANIC FARMING
International federation of organic agriculture
movement (IFOAM)

To provide food of high quality in sufficient

quantity. To work within natural system and
cycles

To encourage and enhance biological cycles

involving micro-organism, soil flora and fauna,
plant and animals

To promote the sustainable use of natural

BENEFITS OF
ORGANIC FARMING
It is recycling of organic matter thus composting
and use of compost, farm yard manure and other
forms of organic fertilizers are important organic
farming activities
Organic farming is conservation
thus soil and water conservation
through use of contours.

of resources;
are essential

Organic farming improves soil structure through

double digging, deep digging and incorporation 6

Organic farming increases food production

and alleviates poverty. Thus kitchen
gardening and botanical pest and disease are
essential
It improves livestock production using
balanced feeds, herbal treatment and keeping
the animal according to their nature
Organic farming is appropriate technology
and home made-do it yourself technologies
that make the farmer self sufficient

INTEGRATION OF

IN
The concept
polyculture should not
be limited

to plants only but extended to cover the whole
farm.

An example of such integration is : ricefish/prawn systems where the fish/prawn mature

in the waterlogged fields and are harvested
before the water drains away (making use of
9

A larger and more permanent example of

integration could be : annual crops + tree crops
+ dairy cows + honey bees.

The animals and tree crops are benefited by the

honey bees (pollination);
crop residues and tree prunings are useful as
cattle feed, green leaf manure and in composts;
the dung from the cattle is useful at the bio-gas
plant, after which the slurry finds use in the fields
as manure and in the compost heap.

CONSTRAINTS
IN ORGANIC
Traditional farming
system that mine the soil
FARMING
without adequate measures of soil and nutrient
management and environmental protection
Lack of land use guidelines for sustainable
natural resource use and conservation
Soil degradation thro ever cultivation, increased
use of synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides which
lead to decline in crop yield and quality
11

THE WAY FORWARD

Policy formulation and legislation
Incorporation of organic agriculture in syllabus
at all levels
Research to improve knowledge and relevant
methods that will enhance productivity
Development of common standards in organic
agriculture
Develop and strengthen local markets and
export

ORGANIC FARMING: INDIA

13

300,000 organic farmers

273,000 --- 373,00(lakh) ha, organic farm land
Rs. 128 crores annual exports (2005-06)
Rs 2300 crores domestic market potential
Features of India Organic Farming:
35% farmers rain fed farming
45% farmers 30-60% irrigated farming
30% farmers fully irrigated farming
70% of farm land was traditionally chemically
free

and faced no yield loss in conversion

Other 30% farmers reported 10-30% yield loss
but
received equal or more income

14

Farming in India probably tended more or less

towards organic methods until the 1960s. It was
labor-intensive.
Green Revolution was an important Indian
government program, it emphasized hybrid
seeds, and chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

But the downside of commercial farming was

seen in air/ground/water pollution;
indebtedness from the high costs of chemicals,
mechanization, and transport; involvement in
the world economy, and therefore it lead to
sensitivity to demand and supply pressures
15

With the 21st century, organic methods are

becoming more popular. For the costs may not
be low. But then neither are the profits.
European and North American buyers are
looking to high standards, in both non-organic
and organic food production.

16

50 % or more produce farmers own

consumption
40% marketable surplus of a farmer is sold in
local vicinity- within the producing area
50% of the marketable surplus going into
traditional channels without organic label
Only 10% of marketable surplus sold as value
added product with organic label
100 hectares of organic farmland would sustain
one agribusiness enterprise and generates 17
additional days of employment per hectare

IMPORTANT FACTS
Organic culture have been started in 130
countries of the world, published in The World of
Organic Agriculture 2009)
Currently 32.2 million hectares of agricultural
land are managed organically and the value for
organic foods in global market $26 billion US
dollar, and is expected to grow to 102 billion US
dollars in 2010
The organic area in India is 2.5 million hectare
including certified forest areas.

19

ALTERNATE ENERGY USE

An organic farm should ideally rely as less as
possible on grid electricity and fossil fuel for its
energy needs. Some easily-implemented
options for any farm in terms of alternate and /
or renewable energy use are :
Animal
Biomagnificati
labor
ons
Solar
Biofuels
Power
Biogas
Wind
Power
Smokeless
