CULTURE AND CIVILISATION

THE RESISTANCE OF PLACE FORM
TOPOGRAPHY, CONTEXT, CLIMATE, LIGHT
AND TECTONIC FORM
THE VISUAL VERSUS THE TACTILE

Jos Rafael Moneo Valls,

born in 1937
-Renowned Spanish architect who won the
Pritzker Prize in 1996.
-graduating in architecture from the Technical
University of Madrid (UPM) in 1961.
-Worked in the Denmark office of Jorn Utzon
for two years.
-1965 , established a private practice in
Madrid.
-Taught architecture at various locations
around the world --from 1985 to 1990 was the
chairman of Harvard Graduate School of
Design.

His principles
- flexibility in varying the appearance of his works
based on their differing contexts is reflected in the
way he takes on each new commission as a fresh
new exercise.

- filters his ideas through the specifics of the site,

the purpose, the form, the climate, and other
circumstances of the project.
-As a result, each of his buildings is unique, but at
the same time, uniquely recognizable as being
from his palette.

-decries the modern trend toward short-lived architecture

and attempts to emphasize the importance of creating
lasting monuments to society.

The material
The material used for the exterior of the
building is brick and a sandstone typical of the
Region of Murcia.

Moneo thought about a musical score for the order of the columns, and
about a glass balcony to break the symmetry, and from which the mayor
could appear to the city.
