Iris Biometric Recognition

Technology Overview

Iris Biometric

Iris

Iris- Is the colored pattern of the eye that is in the

front of the eye, but behind the cornea and remains
unchanged throughout a lifetime.
The iris is created randomly during embryonic
gestation.
The iris opens and shuts the pupil of the eye like a
camera aperture
Pupil
No two irises are alike even between twins
Pupil-Dilates or refracts when a light source is
applied or withdrawn. It is like a lens aperture on a
camera that reduces the number of photons that
come through to protect the retina.
Sclera-The white area outside the iris
Retina-The light sensitive surface at the back of
the eye (unseen)
Specularities-Reflections off the cornea generated
by lighting sources

Iris Recognition

Iris recognition technology is based on the distinctly colored

ring surrounding the pupil of the eye. Made from elastic
connective tissue, the iris is a very rich source of biometric
data, having 250 distinctive characteristics. These include
the trabecular meshwork, a tissue that gives the appearance of
dividing the iris radially, with striations, rings, furrows, a corona,
and freckles.

Iris Recognition Advantages

Hygienic to use because there is nothing to touch

Internal organ that is externally visible.
Not prone to damage or trauma like a fingerprint or hand

Does not change over time

Fully developed by birth
Color may change (pigmentation), but Iris pattern remains the same

1 : 300 Million False Accept Rate (FAR)for 1 eye

1 : 300 Million Squared FAR for 2 eyes
1 :10,000 False Accept for a fingerprint

EyeLock Readers Operation

Three main components:

High pixel density cameras (quantity varies based on reader type)

Infrared illuminators (quantity varies based on reader type)
Processing boards (quantity varies based on reader type)

Cameras are designed and optimized for infrared (IR) light

Allows for maximum data to be read from the iris.

Darkly colored iris detail can not be seen with visible light.
IR can pass through glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.

Readers constantly take and analyze pictures to find iris.

Opportunistic Acquisition
Matching happens after valid iris is acquired

Database is located on the reader.

All data is 256-bit encrypted

Iris Codes are permutated which prohibits reverse engineering iris data
Iris Code contains credential data (Badge Number, ID, etc.)

Matching happens on the reader

Allows for high throughput

After valid match credential data is sent :

Device Cabling

CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable required for network

connectivity.
Standard Wiegand cabling (18/6) required for Access
Control System connectivity.
Never connect EyeSwipe Nano directly to the network.
Always place the Breakout Board between the Nano
and the network.
Breakout board must be installed in junction box
behind Nano
Nano should be attached to Breakout Board using
factory supplied Shielded Ethernet Cable
