The Mechanical Era (1623-1900)

Ancient Counting Machines: The Abacus (in ancient

Babylon, China, Europe).

Mechanical Counting Machines: The Pascaline is a

mechanical calculating device invented by Pascal in
1642.

Analytical Engine: Charles Babbage designed Analytical

Engine.

The Invention of the Vacuum: Initially discovered by

Thomas Edison.

First Generation Electronic Computer

(1937-1953)

MARK 1 was built by a team from IBM and

Harvard University in 1943. Mark 1 used to

create mathematical tables.

The ENIAC electronic computer was 1000X

faster than Mark 1.

EDVAC (electronic Discrete Variable Automatic

Computer) had more internal memory than any

other device till date.

Second Generation (1954-1962)

The Transistor helped machine to operate on

less than 100 watts.

The Integrated Circuit revolutionized the entire

electronic technology. The Pentium Processor
contains 3.1 Million Transistors in 1.5 inch
square!

LARC

was

supposedly

supercomputers.

of the first

Third Generation (1963-1972)

PDP-8 was the first minicomputer which was

commercially successful.

The CDC 7600 came with a small core memory

of 65,536 60-bitwords.

Intel 4004 was one of the first worlds first

microprocessors with a single chip.

Fourth Generation (1972-1984)

Alto was the first workstation, several files were

stored simultaneously using it.

Apple 1 was a single-board computer by Steve.

The first PC used Microsofts MS DOS operating

system.

Apple introduced Lisa, the first PC.

Macintosh was the first computer to be mouse

driven.

Fifth Generation (1984-1990)

PC-AT was several times faster than the PC and

based on the Intel 80286 chip.

PC/RT consisted of 1 MB of RAM, 1.2 MB floppy

disk drive.

Video Toaster was a video editing system for

computer.

Sixth Generation (1990-till date)

The first Pentium microprocessor was released

in 1993.

The

Sun

Ultra

was

processor

based

workstation.

Apple Computers released the colorful iMAC, an

all-in-one system Power Mac G5.

Intel Core-i series.
