WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY

 Solar power is the result of converting sunlight

into electricity Sunlight can be converted
directly into electricity using photovoltaic
(PV), or indirectly with concentrating solar
power (CSP), which normally focuses the
sun's energy to boil water which is then used
to provide power.

HOW IS IT USED

 It can be used as energy resource for

generating electricity, thermal energy. Solar
energy is harvested with the help of solar
panels which are exposed to sun light, which
is then converted into electricity and stored
or used directly. Various kinds of solar
equipments are available today such as
solar cells, solar heaters, solar powered
street lights etc.

THREE MAIN WAYS THAT WE USE THE
SUN’S ENERGY

 SOLAR CELLS
 They are also known as photovoltaic or photoelectric
cells which convert light directly into electricity. In a
sunny climate one can get enough power to run a
100w light bulb from one square metre of solar panel.
Solar cell (PV), is a device that converts light into
electric current using the photoelectric effect. The
first solar cell was constructed by Charles Fritts in the
1880s. Although the prototype selenium cells
converted less than 1% of incident light into
electricity, both Ernst Werner von Siemens and James
Clerk Maxwell recognized the importance of this
discovery. Following the work of Russell Ohl in the
1940s, researchers Gerald Pearson, Calvin Fuller and
Daryl Chapin created the silicon solar cell in 1954.
These early solar cells cost 286 USD/watt and
reached efficiencies of 4.5–6%.

SOLAR WATER HEATERS

 Here heat from the sun is used to heat water

in glass panels. Water is pumped through
pipes in the panel. The pipes are painted
black, so they get hotter when the sun
shines on them. The water is pumped in at
the bottom so that convection helps the flow
of hot water out of the top.

SOLAR FURNACES

 Solar furnaces use a huge array of mirrors to

concentrate the sun`s energy into a small
space and produce high temperatures.
 A solar cooker can be used for cooking, but it
takes too long for it

USES OF SOLAR ENERGY

 GENERATING ELECTRICITY
 PHOTOLUMINESCENT PRODUCTS

 This product store light energy and release it

later. They are a useful source of emergency
lighting in the event of a sudden power
outage.

VARIOUS EQUIPMENTS USING SOLAR
ENERGY AS POWER RESOURCE IN
HOTELS

 As consumers demand more eco-friendly
vacation choices, the tourism industry is
responding with energy-efficient and carbon
friendly resorts and hotels. Following is the list
of various equipments used in hotel industry

Solar water heaters
 Solar energy when used in water heaters can
reduce a significant portion of the
conventional energy being used for heating
water.

Pool Heating
 Solar panels allow to heat the pool in a simple,
economic and ecological way. Thus, the
bathing season can be extended and the
comfort improved without increasing the
consumption of energy nor harming the
environment.

Solar heating and cooling
 It may seem contradictory, but cold can be
generated from heat. This is very
interesting, since, it´s in the summer when
there is a greater demand for air
conditioning and a bigger availability of solar
thermal energy can be obtained.

Heat pumps
 Heat pump is the base of the whole air
conditioning system. Its great advantage is
that it can produces both, air conditioning
and heating. Solar energy based heat pumps
are used to replace the conventional energy
hungry heat pumps
Radiant floor heating
 It is a heating system completely invisible,
clean and aesthetic, that allows maximum
use of the space.Radiant floor heating
consists of a network of pipes uniformly
scattered and buried under the floor.

Water treatment and recycling –
 Solar energy is used for various water
treatment processes like Reverse Osmosis,
sewage treatment, Gray water recycling and
Water decalcification.
Solar Lightings
 Solar energy is used in various lighting
instruments from street lights, garden lights
to small lightning devices used in indoor.

Solar Bulk cooking systems
 The conventional Bulk Cooking system
consumes fast depleting fossil fuel on a very
large scale, generating harmful CO and
other gases leading to ecological imbalance.
It also takes a lot of time to cook the food.

ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR ENERGY

 SOLAR ENERGY IS FREE

 Other than the installation and maintenance cost
of the devices there is no other cost involved in
solar energy generation.
 SOLAR ENERGY IS ABUNDENT
 Solar energy is renewable unlike the conventional
resources (coal, oil) which will inevitably run out.
 SOLAR ENERGY IS CLEAN
 Non-polluting, no carbon dioxide like fossil fuels
 SOLAR ENERGY IS COST EFFECTIVE
 Solar power gives you a return on your investment,
while paying your utility for electricity gives you
0% return.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOLAR ENERGY

 CONTINUITY OF SUPPLY
 During bad weather and nights the supply of solar
energy is stopped because of its basic limitation
 COST
 The initial cost is the main disadvantage of
installing a solar energy system, largely because
of the high cost of the semi-conducting materials
used in building one.
 LOCATION IS IMPORTANT
 If there is no sun, there will be no solar power
because solar power is from the sun. So right
location is very crucial for solar energy
generation
