Ballroom Dancing Started..
Ballroom Dancing started as being a Dance for the 
more wealthy people in community’s leaving Folk 
Dancing to the lower class. Ballroom Dancing is a 
dance between two people with Charisma. Ballroom 
dancing requires emotion and dancing from the 
heart. Ballroom became a very popular dance in the 
1900’s, Ballroom became the social event of the 
community, every week families would go to their 
nearest hall and dance the night away. In the 1990’s 
Ballrooms popularity disappeared because all the 
people that were interested had either died or could 
no longer dance, this was until TV shows like 
“Dancing with the Stars” and “So you Think you can 
Dance” came to peoples TV screens. Ballroom 
Dancing is a very Popular Dance in the 2000’s.
Some Types Of Ballroom
Dancing
Foxtrot – The Foxtrot was create by Harry Fox in 1914, it was created in NYC
Quickstep – The Quickstep was created in 1925 but was called the Charleston
Waltz. 
Tango – The Tango was born in the back street gutters of Buenos Aires, 
Argentina,  In the early 1800’s.
Cha­cha – The Cha­cha was created in 1948, It is a Cuban family Dance.
Paso Doble – The Paso Doble is an Spanish and French dance, 
Jive – The Jive started in the 1930’s in USA
Mambo – The Mambo was created in Afro­Caribbean and Latin American 
cultures found on The island of Cuba. The dance was created around the 1940’s 
Waltz – The Waltz was created in Vienna, Austria in the seventeenth century.

The Tango was born in the back­street gutters of 
Buenos  Aires. The Tango was influenced by both 
Irish and Spanish minds. The Tango is a famous 
dance for Emotion.  Being Spanish the Tango’s 
costume usually contains red.
Tango

Tango  is a dance about Emotion  and love, this is a 
dance of love.  Tango requires moment of the feet and 
hips all emotions must come from the heart.
Waltz
 The waltz is a very elegant dance.
It was created in Vienna, Austria
in the 17th century. The waltz
started as a simple country
dance but then grew into a
dance that was danced in the
upper class circles of Austria,
England and France. In the
1700’s the closed hold was
introduced, in some cases
woman could only dance the
closed hold waltz if they were
married. In 1834 the first waltz
was danced in the USA, the
dance took place in Boston.
Music was made especially for
the waltz some include:
 “Minute Waltz” by Frederic Chopin
 “The Blue Danube” by Johann
Strauss.

The Foxtrot was 
created by Harry Fox 
in 1914, Harry Fox 
created the foxtrot in 
New York City. The 
Foxtrot is a dance that 
involves moving the 
back leg in a smooth 
and floorless action. 
The original Foxtrot 
was a faster and less 
smooth dance however 
the faster style of the 
foxtrot is still danced 
and taught in 
ballrooms across the 
world.

Mary Murphy
 People know Mary Murphy as a judge off “So you think
you can dance America” but that is not all she is
famous for. Mary Ann Murphy is a ballroom champion
and accredited chirographer in the USA and all around
the world. Mary was born on the 9 of March in
Lancaster, Ohio. Mary moved to Washington DC after
graduating from Ohio University. Mary Graduated with
a degree in Physical Education and a minor in modern
Dance. Mary moved to Washington to begin her
career in Ballroom Dancing, she became an instructor
and after two weeks in the job she was invited by the
studio owner to attend the United States Ballroom
Championships in NYC, this event helped Mary to
commit herself to a life in ballroom dancing. Mary
had many partners and won many competitions, in
1990 Mary started up a academy in San Diego, which
was called the Champion Ballroom Academy, this was
in San Diego. Mary is on the judging panalon “So you
think you can Dance” and also judges several
reputable competitions including the United States
National Ballroom Championships.
Shoes
Shoes are a very important part of 
ballroom dancing, If the shoe doesn’t fit 
the Dance can become unbalanced and 
unsmooth. 
*Shoe number one is a Lady's white 
satin court shoe. This Shoe can be dyed 
to match your dress as well as being 
comfortable
.*Shoe number two is a two tone leather 
court shoe with crossover straps which 
creates a fashion detail
* Shoe number 3 is a lady’s two tone 
Latin dance shoe.
*shoe number 4 is a ballroom men's 
shoe, this she is made of leather or 
patent leather.
*Shoe number six is a men's Latin 
leather shoe. It can either be made of
