INTRODUCTION
Energy is a basic requirement for economic development.
Energy consumption has been steadily rising all over the country.
Increased use of fossil fuels is associated with various environmental problems both locally and
globally.
The rate of oil consumption is increasing rapidly, whereas the crude oil reserves are fast
depleting.
In India, Biodiesel production from edible oil resources is not a viable option due to their demand
in the food sector.
Therefore, the non-edible oil resources like Jatropha, Karanja, etc., appear to be a viable option
for biodiesel production in the country.
The major problem associated with ever-increasing biodiesel production would be the disposal of
seed cake after expelling oil from the seed.
Seed cakes, being organic carbonaceous materials, have potential for fuel as well as non-fuel
applications.
Huge production of seed cakes (70% by wt. of total non-edible oil seed yield) demands their
effective utilization in an environmental friendly manner.
One way to manage and utilize non-edible de-oiled seed cakes is by using them as a feed stock
for the pyrolysis process .
The main products of this pyrolysis are Bio-Oil and Bio-Char.
The Bio-Oil can directly used for the engine applications or it can be upgraded by steam
reforming process to get hydrogen and this produced hydrogen can be used as a fuel.
Bio-Char can be used for waste water treatment as an adsorbent.
OBJECTIVES
Pyrolysis of the Non-edible seed cake to produce the Bio-Oil.
To study the potential of the Bio-Oil as a fuel for the Engine applications.
To study the potential of Steam Reforming of Bio-Oil to produce Hydrogen.
Utilization of the Bio-Char as an adsorbent in Waste Water Treatment.
