HUMAN EXPERIENCE OF RACIAL
IDENTITY:
2 FRAME WORKS
1.) Assumes that individuals take an active role in constructing
themselves within particular cultural contexts
2.) Assumes ones personal life is a powerful way to gain insight
into the way people construct their lives and social worlds

THE CUMMINGS FAMILY
Gramps mother was the daughter of a slave woman and a
plantation owner; was sold off
Gramps became one of the first to own a car; owned a shot gun
for jealous White men
Began to view that being a White person was nothing to be proud of of and
being a lighter color was a source of shame
Father in WWII (Tuskegee Airman): couldnt get a pilot job;
worked as carpenter
White customers paid him less
Many White people fail to see the talents and strengths of Black
people
Not all White men are a like: Jewish people
THE PEARSON FAMILY
Nat Pearson- grandfather, landowner (Wheeler County, Georgia)
Well respected family that took care of the poor regardless of race
Mother believed Black people and White people are equal
Black women should be careful with White men
Learned curse words from cousins from the south and their origins

BELIEFS AND STEREOTYPES
Black People White People
Just as good as or better
Just as smart and capable
Should always be prepared
to fight for fair treatment
Have to be two times as
good to be half as good
Often violent and treacherous
Have an inferiority complex:
put down anyone not white
White men often rape Black
women
Dont want to see Black
people awarded for their
abilities
Cant be trusted/a real friend
Arrogant and lazy
Some good White people but
they are the exception
DIALECT OF FAMILY STORIES,
CULTURE AND IDENTITY
Family may reinforce messages of the dominant culture (not for
James)
Family stories give pride and reject the dominant culture
Learned didnt always need her shields but would be fool to throw
them away completely
Chose to associate with many races
Learned:
Race is not a predictor of intelligence
Race is not a good predictor of violence
Prejudice exists on both side though for different reasons
