Conclusion and Recommendation
Great expectations of oil find in Ghana.
However, local artisanal fishermen face
several challenges as Ghanas oil wells
are off-shore.

In addition to the significant loss of
fishing area, the fishing industry is also
most at risk in case of environmental
disasters such as oil spills.
Restriction of fishing activities and
ceasing of farm lands.
Oil companies activities as a factor to
fishes migrating deeper into the
sea.(noise, lights on the rigs etc.)
What is the impact of oil and gas
exploration and production on
livelihoods?
What is the extent of Ghanas
legislation to deal with the impact?
What are the recommendations?

The primary objective of this study is to
identify and analyse the impact of oil and gas
exploration and production on the fishing
industry of Ghana and to propose
recommendations for managing the associated
socio-economic and environmental impacts.

Why fishing industry?
Why the district?
Identification and recommend
best practices.

The reviewed literature covered:
Chemicals in petroleum
Escaping Risks of Oil Activities, Norways Experience
Dilemma of Natural Resources And Economic Growth
Oil, a Curse or Blessing?
Oil extraction and atmospheric emission
Health risk associated with oil extraction activities
According to Larsen (2004; 2005) Norway adopted strong
policies to solve the problem of the Dutch disease involving
mostly macroeconomic policy instruments. Some of these
policies are:
Industrial Policy.
Labour Market Policy.
Education, Research, and Development Policy
Larsen and others alluded to the fact that,
Norways success was attributed to the
existence of strong institution
Oil extraction be it offshore and onshore has a lot of
effects on existing activities in the area where the
oil is being extracted, notable among them are
farming and fishing (Legborsi ,2007).
Sampling and Sampling Technique
Get information about large populations
Less costs, Less field time, More accuracy i.e. Can Do A
Better Job of Data Collection

Data collection instrument
A questionnaire made of 31 close-ended and open-
ended questions were used to measure the views of
the respondents

Data analysis method
Qualitative analysis was conducted using descriptive

before and after the ban.
Coastal communities of the Western Region of which Jomoro is part,
are mostly engaged in Artisanal and commercial fishing. Perceptions
and reactions of the fishermen paint a picture of strong concerns
about the negative effects of offshore oil and gas operations on their
livelihoods. They alleged their incomes have been decreasing
gradually since the commencement of the operations of the
companies.
Ghana need a strong and fully integrated legal, policy and economic
framework. Thus there has to be several shifts in the deeply rooted
status quo.
This need, is not a favor but a right of the citizenry of Ghana, as
enshrined in our constitution. The onus therefore lies on every
Ghanaian.
