The 2013 HAZE

On 13 June 2013, Malaysia suffered the worst haze disaster since 2005. According to DOE, a lot of states had been recorded "unhealthy" air quality with readings above 100. The highest Air Pollution Index (API) recorded was 746 in Muar, Johor which was way above the minimum range of the Hazardous level thus resulting in the declaration of emergency.

The haze is caused by tiny particulates suspended in the atmosphere.

Due to the extreme smallness of these particles they are invisible to the naked eye. Haze is usually milky white in the atmosphere, while against a bright background it will become

yellow or orange-red; likewise, against a darker background it

will be light blue.

Haze most often occurs when dust and smoke particles

accumulate in relatively dry air.

Haze from industrial pollution is known as smog. Haze and smog can become a serious respiratory health threat. Since 1991, haze has been an acute problem in Southeast Asia.

HAZE PARTICLES - THEIR ORIGIN

Haze is an atmospheric phenomenon in meteorological

observation, and is formally called lithometeors

The particles that cause the haze phenomenon can originate

from many sources, some of which are natural and some

anthropogenic. Natural sources include the oceans, forests and ground surface.

Effects on Human Health

Mainly caused by the irritant effects of fine dust particles on the nose, throat, airways, skin and eyes. The health effects of haze will depend on its severity as measured by the Pollutants Standards Index (PSI). There is also individual variation regarding the ability to tolerate air pollution. Most people would at most experience sneezing, running nose, eye irritation, dry throat and dry cough from the pollutants.

Effects on Plants And Animals

Thick haze prevents sunlight from reaching the green plants. Plants grow slower due to the lack of sunlight. As they fail to photosynthesize, the plants eventually die, causing many insects which rely on them to die to.

Prohibition on Open Burning

The Government prohibits open burning, smoke is a major

contributor to the haze. Apart from the open burning can cause fires that can not be controlled.

Cloud seeding As a result of El-Nino phenomenon, dry weather and drought have hit the country. When dry weather, a high temperature of clouds, water droplets into a light, very light drops can not be down to earth as rain. Thus silver iodine or dry ice will be applied to lower the temperature of the cloud. Ice crystal is formed and grows, then pulled by gravity, it will fall to the ground and turns into water droplets when diluted as a result of the temperature of the hot

earth. Rain could help the situation when it brings together the haze
falls to the ground.

Wear face mask if there is a need to stay outdoor

Avoid Outdoor activities

Try to cut down or avoid strenuous activities when you are at

Outdoor. E.g. cut down exercise such as jogging, cycling, swimming etc.

REASON : You will inhale in the unhealthy air and cause

irritation to your throat, body and respiratory system.

Stay hydrated at all times

Drink more water.

Seek doctor help if feeling not well

If there were irritation such as dry sore eyes, sneezing,

coughing or respiratory problems due to the haze, go to the

doctor and seek help. People with history of asthma or heart

problem are advice to stay Indoor and abstain from outdoor activities.
