Heat Transfer
The transmission of energy from one region to another as a result of temperature gradient

Importance Of Heat Transfer

The study of heat transfer is carried out for the follow purposes:i) To estimate the rate of flow of energy as heat through the boundary of a system under studies (both under steady and transient conditions). ii) To determine the temperature field under steady and transient conditions.

Introduction To Fins
Fin is a surface that extends from an object to increase the rate of heat transfer to or from the environment by increasing convection.

PURPOSE OF FINS

The purpose of fins is to improve heat dissipation from a surface to surroundings.

VARIOUS TYPES OF FINS

The fins are designed and manufactured in many shapes and forms. These are mainly of following types. 1. Straight fin 2. Annular fin 3. Pin fin or spine Materials used for fins are copper, aluminium and iron.

APPLICATIONS
The applications of fins are 1. Automobiles 2. Aircrafts 3. Air compressors 4. Refrigerators 5. Generators.

ADVANTAGES

1. Due to the extended surfaces of the fins more amount of heat is dissipated. 2. Cost of manufacturing is less. 3. Ease of design. 4. According to the rate of heat transfer type of fins can be selected. 5. Less weight and low complications.

DISADVANTAGES

1. It occupies more space. 2. It cannot be used where high amount of heat is to be dissipated.

DESIGN AND THERMAL ANALYSIS OF FINS

The procedure includes two steps:Step 1: Designing of fins using CATIA software and Step 2: Analysis of designed fins using ANSYS software.

DESIGN

Let us get started by starting up catia and opening a new Part Design file (Start > Mechanical Design > Part Design) and name the part Fins. Select the xy axis and select the Sketch tool

Use the Line tool to draw the straight lines of the fins according to the dimensions. Draw the sketch of fins according to the picture below:

To remove any unwanted lines during the drawing of sketch use the Quick Trim
which can be found under the Trim toolbar.

tool

tool. You can find the Trim tool in the Operation

Select the Quick Trim tool and select the lines that we want to delete. After the completion of sketch exit the workbench. Then the sketch is shown as

select the Pad tool. Set the Length to 50mm and select the mirrored extent below and then click OK. The part will be displayed as shown below.

SAVE the part design in .igs format so that the design of fins is completed.

ANALYSIS

Let us start our analysis using finite element analysis method (FEA). It is a technique used to obtain approximate solutions. ANSYS is a software package used for analysis of a component by FEA method.

PROCEDURE FOR ANSYS ANALYSIS

The procedure for static analysis consists of these main steps: I. Pre-processor phase 1. Discretization of structure. 2. Numbering of nodes and elements. II. Solution phase 1. Selection of displacement function or interpolation function. 2. Define the material behavior with stress-strain relations and strain displacement relations. 3. Derivation of element stiffness matrix and equations. 4. Assemble the element equations to get global or total equations. 5. Applying boundary conditions. 6. Solution for unknowns.

III. Post-processor phase 1. Computation of element strains and stressesfrom nodal displacements 2. Interpret the results. The following table shows the brief description of the steps followed in each Phase:

A. PRE-PROCESSOR
Pre processor has been developed so that the same program is available on micro, mini, super mini and main frame computer system to other. Pre processor is an interactive model builder to prepare FE (finite element) model and input data. The following section describes various capabilities and features of the preprocessor.

B. SOLUTION
The solution phase deals with the solution of the problem according to the problem definitions. All the tedious work of formulating and assembling of matrices are done by the computer, and finally displacements and stress values are given as output. Some of the capabilities ANSYS are linear static analysis, transient dynamic analysis etc.

C. POST PROCESSOR
It is a powerful user-friendly post processing program. Using interactive color graphics; it has extensive plotting features for displaying results obtained from the finite element analysis. Employing state of the art image enhancement techniques, facilities viewing of: Contours of stresses, displacements, temperatures etc.,

CONCLUSION

Heat transfer through ribbed fins is designed using Catia V5R18 and analyzed using Ansys V12. The total length of the part is 330 mm in which fins are of different cross-sections are made. It is observed from the above results that fin are subjected to maximum temperatures and minimum temperatures which are as follows:
