The oxidation of glucose starts with the process of
glycolysis within the cytoplasm where the glucose molecule
(six-carbon) is converted into two molecules of pyruvate
(three-carbon)
In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate is reduced to lactic acid
by the addition of two hydrogen atoms. This process is
associated with a net hydrogen ion production, which
lowers intracellular pH
Anaerobic glycolysis forms only two molecules of
ATP for each molecule of glucose
In the presence of oxygen, pyruvate enters the
mitochondria and is oxidized to carbon dioxide and
water
a total of 38 molecules of ATP are generated per
molecule of glucose
