Development of Long Range Plans

Any kind of business activity calls for long range for success, the same is true for MIS. The plan of MIS is consistent to the business plan of the organisation. A long range MIS plan provides direction for the development of he systems, and provides a basis for achieving the specific targets or tasks against a time frame.

MIS Plan Includes

1. Strategy for the plan achievement 2. The architecture of the MIS 3. The system development schedule 4. Hardware & Software plan

Determining the Information Requirements

Four methods of determining the information requirements: 1.Asking or interviewing 2.Determining from the existing system 3.Analysing the critical success factors. 4.Experimentation & modeling.

Asking or Interviewing
Under this method fully structured interview schedule is used. If there are more that 1 users, either Cover all the possible answers to the question. Group consensus can be sought to get the most feasible set of answers. Delphi method: the expert or experienced users are asked to give their best answers. System designer has to test the validity of all the answers independently.

Determining From The Existing System

In many cases the existing system which an orgasnisation is using form many years is enough to inform the requirements of the information. But in any way other companies can give additional information requirements. Irrespective of the type of organisation and business, 80% of the information requirement is common and the balance 20% may be typical to the organisation, which need to be determined separately

Analysing the Critical Success Factors

Every organisation perform successfully on efficient management of certain critical success factors. In many a times a function is singularly critical to successful functioning of a business organisation. For e.g.: In a high technology business, the technology becomes the critical factor. In service the organisation, marketing & service become the critical factor.

Experimentation & Modeling.

When there is total uncertainty, the designer and the user off the information resort to this method to determine the requirement of the information. Test marketing of a product is an approach of the experimentation to decide the correct marketing strategy. The information requirement through this process is quantitative change as the user of the information get and opportunity to change and learn if he willing to change than organisation can adapt other wise the use is to removed. And this process take long time & money.

Development & Implementation of MIS

Having made the plan of the MIS, the development of the IS calls for the determining the strategy of development. The Development strategy determine where to began and in what sequence the development can take place with the sole objective of assuring the information support. Prototype Approach Life Cycle Approach

Implementation of MIS
The implementation of the system is a management process. It brings organisational change. It affects people and changes their work style. The process evokes a behavior response which could be either favorable or unfavorable depending upon the strategy of system implementation. For successful implementation organisation has to handle the human factor carefully.

There are certain guidelines for the system designer for successful implementation of the system: 1.Not question beyond a limit the information need of the user. 2.Not to forget that his role is to offer a service and not to demand terms. 3.The designer should request the demand of the user.
