Alderfers ERG Theory

Organisational Behaviour

What is an Organization?
An organization is a collection of people who work together to achieve individual and organizational goals.

What is Organisational Behavior?

Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of factors that affect how individuals and groups act in organizations and how organizations manage their environments.

What Is Motivation?
Motivation can be defined as the inner propelling force or impetus prompted by an inner persuasion, incentive or reason giving the person the prompting to be energized to act in a certain way.

Successful motivation involves:

Getting people to do what you want them to do. When you want them to do it The way you want them to do it Because they want to do it

Alderfers ERG Theory of Motivation

Alderfers Theory
Theory of human motivation, formulated by Clayton Alderfer What motivates a person to act?" or "Why do we ever do anything?"

The Need-Groups
Existence needs: Food, water, air, shelter, clothing, safety, physical love and affection. Relatedness needs: To be recognized and feel secure as part of a group, a family, a culture Growth needs: To progress toward one's ideal self.

Alderfer's Hierarchy of Motivational Needs

The Pyramidal Form

Presented in pyramidal form, with the most essential needs at the bottom. Structure of human needs must start at the lower, most essential level, and that higher "structures" can be achieved only when the base is "solid."

Case Study (Need)

The Three Parties

Need For Existence

We hope that our work will satisfy our Existence needs, that it will provide us a salary that buys food, clothing, transportation and other things we need to exist in our culture.

Need For Relatedness

Does the occupation help one feel like one is a part of its development? If not, the job may be helping one feel alienated

Need For Growth

Change for the better is growth We tend to seek employment that will continue to help us grow.

Frustration Regression Principle

If a higher level need remains unfulfilled, the person may regress towards lower level needs.

ERG Theory for Prediction of Job Satisfaction

1. Will this occupation satisfy my needs for material goods,
physical safety, comfort, security and longevity? 2. Will it help me feel that I am part of a family, part of a culture, contributing in an appropriate manner, and appreciated for what I do? 3. Will it give me opportunities to change, to grow over my lifetime, becoming more of the person I want to be?

Similarities With Maslows

Growth: Self-Actualization External Esteem Needs Relatedness: Internal Esteem Needs Social Needs Existence: Safety Needs Physiological Needs

Differences With Maslows

Alderfers ERG theory demonstrates that more than one need may motivate at the same time. The ERG theory also accounts for differences in need preferences between cultures better than Maslow's Need Hierarchy. Frustration Regression Theory

Leadership Lessons
Each employee operates with the need to satisfy several motivators simultaneously. The inability of the environment or situation to satisfy a need for social interaction might increase the desire for more money or better working conditions.
