Introduction
Nandan Nilekani is an Indian entrepreneur and the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI). After a successful career at Infosys, he is now heading the Government of India's technology committee,TAGUP.

Mr. Nandan Nilekani was born in 1955 in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.

His parents are Durga and Mohan Rao Nilekani. His father worked as a General Manager of Mysore and Minerva Mills. His elder brother, Vijay lives in Washington D.C where he works in the Nuclear Energy Institute

Nilekani is married to Rohini Nilekani, whom he met at a quizzing event at IIT. They have two children, Nihar and Janhavi, each of whom has received an undergraduate degree from Yale University.

CAREER
He joined Mumbai-based Patni Computer Systems where he was interviewed by N.R. Narayana Murthy. Nilekani became the Chief Executive Officer of Infosys in March 2002, taking over from Murthy.

He left Infosys on 9 July 2009 to serve as the chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India, in the rank of a cabinet minister under invitation from the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.

About uidai
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is an agency of the Government of India responsible for implementing the AADHAAR program, a national unique identification project. It was established in February 2009, and owns and operates the Unique Identification Number database.

UIDAI has headquarters in Delhi and a technology centre in Bangalore. It also has 8 regional offices in Chandigarh, Delhi, Lucknow, Ranchi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore with IAS,IRS officers heading it. The authority aims to provide a unique id number to all Indians, but not smart cards.

UIDAI launched AADHAAR program in the tribal village, Tembhli, in Shahada Nandurbar, Maharashtra on 29 September 2010. The program was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The first resident to receive an AADHAAR was Ranjana Sonawane of Tembhli village.

AADHAAR will become the single source of identity verification. Residents would be spared the hassle of repeatedly providing supporting identity documents each time they wish to access services such as obtaining a bank account, passport, driving license and so on.
