Geriatrics, the study of old age, includes the physiology, pathology, diagnosis, and management of the diseases of older adults Geriatric nursing is the field of nursing that specializes in the care of the elderly

To assist older person and provide care to elderly in achieving optimal health, wellbeing and quality To provide need based comprehensive health care

PROBLEMS OF GERIATRIC POPULATION DUE TO CHANGES IN BODY SYSTEM

Decreased physical ability Fatigue with exertion Elevated blood pressure Pressure sores

Decreased gas exchange Decreased physical ability Increased potential for infection or aspiration

Difficulty in chewing Feeling of fullness/heart burn after meals Dry mouth Decreased appetite Malnutrition Constipation

Nocturia Polyurea Kidney and bladder cancers Risk of falls

Ovarian cysts Vaginal dryness, itching Lower self esteem in women

PRINCIPLES OF GERIATRIC NURSING

Consider individuality and his preferences Be patient, kind and sympathetic Communicate effectively, demonstrate respect Encourage him to make his choices and decision Assist elderly to achieve emotional stability Stimulate mental acuity and sensory input and physical activity to uplift their self esteem, self concept and confidence

Maintain privacy and handle them gently Ensure adequate nutrition Help elderly to establish good sleep patterns Caution elderly about the use of drugs Have them physically examined annually and whenever needed Observe any psychophysical changes which alter their body image and behaviour

ROLE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE IN THE CARE OF ELDERLY

Provides direct health care to the elderly

Educates and trains the carer to give care in the absence of the nurse

Supervises the care given by carer

Nurse educates elderly to be more and more self dependent

Nurse maintains accurate, precise and complete record of care given to the elderly
