APEC Member Economies HISTORY


The idea of APEC was firstly publicly broached by former Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Bob Hawke, during a speech in Seoul, Korea in January 1989. Later that year, 12 Asia-Pacific economies met in Canberra, Australia to establish APEC. The founding members were: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) works in three broad areas to meet the Bogor Goals of free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and 2020 for developing economies. Known as APEC's 'Three Pillars', APEC focuses on three key areas:

Background Vision, Mission & Objective

APEC Member Economies Background


In September 2007, APEC Ministers agreed to establish the APEC Policy Support Unit (PSU) - a research and analysis arm for APEC. To be attached to the APEC Secretariat, the unit will be funded by voluntary contributions and overseen by a governance board. The PSU became operational in 2008, and operates under a set of governance arrangements. Its mandate has been extended until the end of 2020 following the agreement of the APEC Ministers at the 2012 APEC Ministerial Meeting.

The PSU is guided by the vision to be recognized as an integral part of the APEC architecture and highly respected source of policy research and analysis, contributing to APECs goal of supporting sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Its mission is to be policy research and analysis arm of APEC comprising openly recruited professionals working together with APEC Senior Officials, committees and fora, in improving the quality of their deliberations and decisions and promoting policies that support the achievement of APECs goals, by providing objective and high quality research, analytical capacity and policy support capability. The objectives are to: (a) provide robust research and analysis to support APEC fora and members so that policy development is evidence-based, internal capacities are enhanced, and implementation of policy measures can be evaluated; (b) strengthen engagement and research collaboration with international and regional organizations; and (c) communicate policy research and analytical outcomes to key APEC stakeholders.
