Introduction
Water is essential to the success of our economy, the health of our environment and the well being of our society. Water will remain essential to the well being of our children and their society. In order to preserve a sustainable supply of good quality drinking water for future generation, we need to cane our current pattern of consumption by using water more efficiently and building as ethic of water conservation through out the community.

Sustainable development
Sustainable development (SD) - mode of human development in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come The concept of sustainable water management supports economic and social development by optimizing the use and management of water for people, agriculture commerce and industry, whilst protecting and improving the environment for the future.

PepsiCo
The company conserved nearly 16 billion litres of water in 2011, from a 2006 baseline, through the application of water saving equipment and technologies, creative recycling and re-use, and by deploying a water management system throughout its manufacturing facilities. By assisting farmers in growing more water efficient crops, implementing better agricultural practices and irrigation techniques, and by supporting watershed management initiatives, PepsiCo has saved water all along its agricultural supply chain.

Technological Improvements
In the U.K., Walkers business is not only reducing its water usage, but they are developing technology to capture the natural water from the processing of potatoes with the aim of making facilities water-selfsufficient In the U.S., a technique for cleaning new Gatorade bottles with purified air, instead of water. The Aquafina brand also uses an innovative method to save water during its packaging processso there is no need to rinse the bottles with water.

In India
PepsiCo's manufacturing facilities in India not only conserved more than 3 billion liters of water, but achieved a positive water balancegiving back more water than our facilities consumed. Direct seeding- Instead of growing the seedlings in a nursery, planting the seeds directly into the ground which bypasses the nursery, eliminates the need for flood irrigation, and reduces water-use by as much as 30 percent. The practice of direct seeding has been around for decades, but PepsiCo developed the innovative farm equipment to help automate this process.

HUL
Khamgaon The HUL manufacturing plant in Khamgaon, Maharashtra started a pilot watershed management project on a five-hectare plot, to prevent soil degradation and conserve water. The construction of dams and trenches resulted in the transformation of this dry and arid land into a verdant forest of about 6,300 trees. The total land under cultivation during the second crop season increased to 470 acres.

Silvassa HUL and the NGO Vanarai collaborated in Silvassa and other locations in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The project has secured sustainable development of water and land resources, helped the local population attain self-sufficiency in basic needs of food, water, fodder and fuel, and generated local employment opportunities through increased economic activity. More than 67 million litres of water have been harvested since 2004, with soil conservation treatment carried out on 282 hectares of land.

Puducherry HUL's Puducherry unit partnered with DHAN Foundation in 2008-09 to renovate eight village ponds The project focussed on building social capital by empowering a specially formed villagers' pond association to execute the work. The renovated rainwater harvesting system has fulfilled the multiple domestic needs of 4,519 households and 346 acres of land have been irrigated due to the rejuvenation of ground water.

Outcome: The project has given positive results / impacts in all social, environmental & economical aspects of life of local community; few of them are as under: 1. Agricultural productivity has increased. Instead of one crop per year, farmers are able to grow three. Over all agricultural productivity has increased by 1.5 to 3 fold with introduction of low water intensity crops and horticulture. Total area benefitted is over 23,000 Hectare and total number of farmers benefitted 15,500.

In the span of 4 years, 5 village watershed committees with 75 members and 15 water user groups have been formed for management of the constructed structures. 16 Water Harvesting structures 6 check dams and 10 irrigation Tanks have been constructed between 2005-08 607 gully Plugs, 28 GI-Chain linked Gabion, 58 loose stone check dams were constructed. 22,011cubic meter of field bunding was carried out, benefiting 4,044 households and generating 31,300personsdays of employment.
3/16/2013 29
15 watershed management related training programme and 7 exposure visits have been organized. The structures provide critical irrigation directly to more than 400 hectares in the command area The creation of dead storage potential of more than 5 Lakhs cubic meter of water contributes to the recharge of numerous well downstream, thus increasing the command area significantly.

Recycle Goal: Return to the environment, at a level that supports aquatic life, the water we use in our manufacturing operations by the end of 2010 through comprehensive wastewater treatment. Wastewater- water used in system operations is recycled through a treatment and cleansing process. This ensures that the quality of the wastewater meets applicable local laws and regulations before being released back into the environment. Treated wastewater is then used within plants for utility purposes in boilers, evaporators, chillers and outside for landscape irrigation and dust control, reducing use of external water resources.
3/16/2013 34
Cont.
All the discharged waste water is measured and also used in many plants for developing green belt inside the plants. Thus, the treated waste water in large number of units complies with Zero Discharge norm of the PCB where in all the treated waste water is utilized within the plant premises for on-land discharge. The treated wastewater is also used for secondary purposes of the plant, such as toilet cleaning, floor wash etc which is in keeping with our policy to reduce water and use recycled water for secondary purposes within our plants

Replenish Goal: Expand global support of healthy watersheds and sustainable community water partnerships. At the end of 2010, had installed more than 400 rainwater harvesting structures spread across 22 states. These structures had installed in partnership with Resident Welfare Associations, Market Welfare Associations, Educational Institutions, Industry Associations, NGOs and local communities. They had also undertaken the restoration of several ponds including the historical Sarang pond in Sarnath and Lehartara pond in Varanasi.

They had also constructed check dams in several areas of the country like at Kalahasti in Chittoor, in Andhra Pradesh, at Ramnagaram near Bangalore and at Wada near Mumbai. These initiatives are helping us reach our goal of reaching a zero water balance with respect to groundwater usage. By achieving a zero water balance with respect to groundwater usage, the Coca-Cola system in India will create a rainwater harvesting potential equivalent to the amount of groundwater used for its operations in India.
