The idea behind it

The project was considered to be a true and real investigation into a practical interface between the human body and digital electronics; or more specifically, between the human hand and a MIDI synthesizer. ( MIDI synthesizer ): are devices that electronically synthesize sound and play music in response to incoming MIDI data

MIDI and the Beginnings

The initial MIDI specification was developed in 1982 and various changes have been made over the course of its implementation. including Roland, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits and Fender Rhodes, developed digital interfaces which allowed their own digital instruments to work together, but these proprietary interfaces did not permit interworking between devices developed by different manufacturers.

How it has been manufactured

Manufacturers used this voltage to link instruments together so that one device could control one or more others, but this system was inadequate for control of newer polyphonic and digital synthesizers. Some manufacturers created systems that allowed their own equipment to interconnect, but each scheme used a different transmission rate, so one manufacturer's systems could not synchronize with those of another.

Problems Faced
the lack of a universal, manufacturer independent sound patch. ( will be explained ) Musicians using synthesizers from different manufacturers had to learn the differences between the various interfaces and had to adapt their work to fit within the constraints of each system

Improvements done
MIDI has been improved somewhat since 1983. The newer improvements include control over musical features like pitch bending, slurring, tremolo, and reverb. (Any new changes to the protocol must be passed by the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) and the Japan MIDI Standards Committee.) Better sound cards have been used to improve the sound quality

Future of MIDI and benefits

the files are easily 1000 times more compact than digital audio. The properties of each note you can change are the pitch, the velocity and the timing relative to the start of the piece. you can build your composition note by note, bass to alto; alto to bass, beat to beat...or you can play the whole thing as a performance on your midi keyboard.
