SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE

What is the global warming and climate change? How does it relate to SWM?

CLIMATE CHANGE
Is any long term change in the patterns of average weather of a specific region. It is the result of the global warming of the planet.

Climate change results from too much concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere which results to global warming and thus affecting our normal weather patterns.

Improper waste management and unabated burning of garbage and agricultural waste leads to global warming and climate change. Thus the call for proper waste management.

IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Extreme heat and drought in some places

While sea level rising and flooding in other areas.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

1. 2. 3. 4. Sea level rising Arctic sea is melting Glaciers are melting Sea-surface temperatures are warming

5. Heavier rainfall cause

flooding in many regions 6. Extreme drought increasing

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

7. Ecosystems are changing 8. Hurricane have changed in frequency and strength 9. More frequent heat waves 10. Warmer temperatures affect human health 11. Seawater is becoming more acidic

Manila Will Sink

JUST LIKE OTHER MAJOR ASIAN CITIES: Manila, coastal villages under threat from sea-level rise ( By TJ Burgonio); Source: Philippine Daily Inquirer, 23 Sep 08 MANILA, PhilippinesCoastal communities in the Philippines are under threat from sea level rise, while a mega, but low-lying city like Manila is vulnerable to more disasters, according to a World Vision report.

IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Drought Flood Extreme or erratic rainfall Soil erosion Farm sedimentation Pests infestation Loss of biodiversity

IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE

5. Infrastructure damage (includes pre & post harvest facilities) 6. Low agricultural activity 7. Migration or displacement of farming communities 8. Intrusion of sea water (due to sea level rise)

IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON COASTAL COMMUNITIES

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Diminishing fish catch Coral bleaching Mangrove loss due to sea level rise Ocean acidification Extinction of species Migration of species Storm surges Coastal beach erosion Infrastructure damage

GLOBAL WARMING
It is the increase in the average temperature of the earths nearsurface air and ocean It is the rising global temperature (more heat trapped in the atmosphere which alters weather conditions)

CAUSE
Increase in the atmospheric GHG (Greenhouse Gases) concentration Note: Largest contributing source of GHG is the burning of fossil fuels leading to the emission of carbon dioxide.

Where do these GHGs come from?

Carbon dioxide fossil combustion fuel (coal, oil, gas), land use conversion (deforestation), cement production Methane fossil fuel, ride paddy (seeds and fertilizers) Nitrous oxide fertilizers, industrial processes, combustion

Where do these GHGs come from?

Chlorofluorocarbon liquid coolants, foam Hexa liquid coolants Perfluorocarbon production of aluminum Sulfur hexa fluoride production of aluminum

DEFORESTATION - RELEASES CO2

TSP levels above the standards by as much as 200%

Adverse health impacts

Air pollution

80-90% of air polluton is from cars-motor vehicles

All is not hopeless Of all the creatures on this earth, in spite of all its weaknesses it is only the Human species who has in his power to determine what impact his actions today will have in the future.
