BIRD MIGRATION IN TANJUNG TUAN: AWARENESS, ATTITUDE AND SOCIOECONOMIC TOWARDS WILLINGNESS TO PAY AMONG PEOPLE

Introduction
Tanjung Tuan, also known as Cape Rachado, is about 18 km from Port Dickson is a forest reserve popular with visitors for its quiet beaches and nature activities, such as bird watching. During the migration season, thousands of raptors can be seen flying across the Straits of Malacca Tanjung Tuan is an important stop over site for migratory raptors after crossing the Straits of Malacca. For raptors arriving late in the evening, it provides shelter for the night before they take off for flight the next day. Without Tanjung Tuan, many raptors may never make it back, due to exhaustion and lack of food. Bird migrate in March and September

Objective
To know the level of knowledge among our people about the importance to conserve the bid migration. To know the awareness and perception of our people towards bird migration. To test their willingness to pay as an effort to conserve and protect the bird migration and the raptors.

Methodology
We selected 50 people randomly and asked them to fill the surveys. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM)- uses surveys to know responses about WTP for environmental quality such non-used market. Ask them directly about their knowledge of bird migration and awareness towards forest reserve in Tanjung Tuan.

The awareness of people towards bird migration

The major cause of decreasing bird migration is deforestation (62%). This is because the Tanjung Tuan is develope to be a tourism place.

Biodiversity is the highest result (56%) because: - Oldest reserve forest in Malaysia (1921). - Gazette as wildlife sanctuary area (1971). - Area bird protection (1991)

The perception and attitude of people towards raptors

Based on the question, 38% of our respondent agrees to protect the habitat of bird migration as the way that we can do to preserve bird migration.

From this result, habitat is one of the main factors to attract the bird migration come to Tanjung Tuan as their stopover and to make sure the birds have rest enough to continue their journey. As we seen, our respondents have their knowledge about the need of bird migration and they know we need to do habitat protection to preserve the bird migration.

Raptor habitats have to be protected

Based on the result of this question, our respondents agreed that raptors habitat have to be protected. It also shows the awareness of people to protect the raptor.

From the result, it shown that our respondents strongly agreed that public awareness is very important in protecting bird migration. They know public should play role to help protecting the bird migration.

According to the graph, 58% of our respondent strongly agreed that bird migration has ecotourism. Through this result, our people know the migration of bird can attract people to come and see the raptor that they never seen before during the bird migration season.

From the result, 74% of our respondents strongly agreed that government also should play more roles to conserve raptors. Meanwhile, the respondent hope that government should have the strategy to protect the bid migration.

According to the result, majority of our responding strongly disagree if there is nothing much we can do to conserve raptors. From this result, our people have their own awareness to do something to protect the bird migration

COMPARISON BETWEEN WILLINGNESS TO PAY AND OTHER FACTORS

24% bird watching is the highest among all because the respondent know the value of bird watching

42% of respondent know the important of raptors conservation because they have the experience of bird watching

24% are willing to pay For habitat protection to Preserve bird migration because: - Positive attitude

46% respondents are strongly agree that raptors habitats should be protected so, they willing to pay. - Know the important of bird migration Raptor habitats have to be protected

48% willing to pay but they feel government should play more roles to conserve bird migration

22% not agree that nothing can do to conserve bird migration because they know the value of bird migration So they willing to pay for conservation bird migration

30% from others occupation are willing to pay for conserve bird migration because: -Many of them are student - have knowledge about environmental protection

34% income below RM1000 are willing to pay for bird migration because: -Most of them are student - more awareness to nature compare to materialistic person

48% are willing to pay RM1-10 - They feel that the price is reasonable -most of them have small income below than RM1000

Why we should pay for entering Tanjung Tuan?


As a conservation includes maintenances, research and education purposes at Rumah Api Tanjung Tuan, Hutan Simpan Tanjung Tuan and along the coastline. To provide facilities such as binocular (bird watching), walking trail, toilet and others. To cover the environment campaign fees for posters, banner, volunteer and others

Conclusion
We found that our people have their awareness towards the bird migration. They also have some knowledge about the raptors and they realized the factor that can harm the raptors. But, we found that most of the respondent know the value of Tanjung Tuan as the important stop over for raptors and willing to pay some amount as an effort and support to protect bird migration
