Bell Work - respond to this quote: When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then we will know peace. - Jimi Hendrix
Bell Work 1. -54 ____ 53 2. -67 ____ -69 3. I-6I ____ I6I 4. Make a number line and order 3, -5, 1, -2, 0 THANKS!!!
Whats an integer?
Natural numbers (counting numbers)
Whole numbers (include zero)
Integers are negatives (opposites)
Opposites are numbers that are the same distance away from zero, measured in units.
A positive becomes a negative and negative becomes positive.
Absolute value the distance away from zero I-3I = 3 as does I3I = 3
THE GREATEST NUMBER IS THE ONE THAT IS FARTHEST RIGHT ON THE NUMBER LINE
When comparing, a positive number is always greater than a negative number. 5 > -122
A smaller negative number is always greater than a larger negative number -7 < -4
A larger positive number is greater than the smallest. 123 > 120
Practice
In your group answer the following questions: 1. Make the statement true -53 _?_ -54 2. What is the opposite of these numbers, -5, 89, -586, 65859? 3. What is the absolute value of I-9I, I10I and I-15I? 4. Order these numbers from least to greatest 2, -3, -7, 1, 10
+ moves right.
Adding Integers
Key concepts
Different signs than the number with the largest absolute value keeps the sign.
-3 + 5 = 2 while 3 + (-5) = -2 Use a number line to help you.
Same sign than the sum of the two numbers keeps the sign.
5 + 3 = 8 while -5 + (-3) = -8
Subtracting Integers
Use a number line Add its opposite Hint subtracting a negative bumps into a positive 5 (-5) = 5 +5 they both equal 10
Advanced
You can use absolute value I-3I in a problem
Example 8I-3I is the same as 8*3 = 24 8I3I is the same as 8*3 = 24
Evidence
If your decimal quiz, pg630 were not counted as an artifact two weeks ago please be working on those.
I need evidence that you can add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals.
Re-do quiz or conference with Jones Fix pg 630 #1-16 or schedule a conference with Jones
I also need evidence from last week that you can find the Prime factorization of a number as well as the LCM and GCF. Ready for this week. Go to next slide
Evidence
This week practice is on pg 33, 41, and 46 in the green book or pg 32 in the red book (to challenge or advance yourself). Check your answers in the bac of the book or with your friends. You can also challenge your partners by creating problems. If you are ready to work on an artifact: 1. Raise your hand for me to see your practice work or explain to me how you are ready. 2. If I approve your practice I will give you a classroom copy list of assignment to choose from. 3. Turn in your evidence (the assignment) in the file folder make sure to answer these questions: Do you show work to support your answer? Is it neat enough I can read it, is it on the lines? Did you circle your answers? Is HAND in the upper right hand corner? 4. Unsatisfying work will be returned to you. You will need to choose another assignment. 5. Feel free to always schedule a conference with me. THANKS!
