Manuscript: reading from notes. Memorized: memorizing the contents and reproducing. Extemporaneous: complete prior preparation Impromptu: presenting without prior preparation (speaking) off hand.
For short talks, you may be asked to present periodic, brief progress reports, introduce various persons, present awards, and occasionally welcome visitors or meeting attendees. Longer speeches may be presentations or proposals or highlights of research reports or complex problems-to audiences within or outside your organization.
Determine the purpose. Analyze the audience and the situation. Choose the main ideas for your message. Research your topic thoroughly. Organize the data and write your draft. Plan visual aids if desirable. Rehearse the talk and revise where necessary.
The general purpose of speeches are: To inform or Explain: to make an idea clear, explain the results of an investigation etc. Overall, it is to promote understanding. To Persuade: The goal here is to make the audience to act or accept your briefs. (e.g in business,you do this through logically proving your contention, policy or claim).
A good speech has three parts: Introduction (15%) It includes, greeting and your introduction Introducing audience interest Introducing the topic Preview your presentation
Main Body 60% Point-by Point presenting the arguments (informational, explanatory, persuasive). Body is usually called Text or Discussion sections in Reports.
Closing/Summary /Conclusion 10% Summarizing the arguments presented Conclude with the analysis/evaluation/recommendations A strong memorable closing statement which can be a fact, food for the thought question etc. Thank the audience for their attention.
Q/Answer session 15% Focus on the Questioner Maintain Control Motivate Questions Respond Appropriately Conclude the Speech
