The True Killers of Romeo & Juliet

Though there are many people to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, such as their

parents since there has been a major feud going on between the two families. Also, there is

Mercutio, who was killed by Tybalt. Therefore causing Romeo to then avenge Mercutio’s death

by killing Tybalt, but only leading him to being banished from Verona, but above all, causing

him to leave Juliet.

Having said that, the character who should be blamed the most should be Friar Lawrence.

He was always taking care of Romeo and Juliet. First, he helped them be together and keep their

secret because they were secretly married, hoping it would end the fighting. Secondly, he also

was the one who gave Juliet the potion to put her in a coma-like state till she woke up and left

with Romeo since she didn't want to marry Paris. Then again, another possible person who is at

blame is the nurse. Since she Juliet's caretaker and a good friend, she helped give letters to

Romeo from Juliet to find out when they should wed. Yet she was the one that said that Juliet

should marry Paris since Romeo was gone.

Moreover, evidence in the story has proven that Friar Lawrence and the nurse are at

blame. In Act II, Scene VI, the Friar was about to wed the couple, however, he questioned why

they should marry because he knew that Romeo was too young by saying, “Thy love did read by

rote were so young.” Evidence portraying that the nurse is at blame is when she learns that

Romeo has been banished, she tells Juliet that she “think it best you married with the County. O

he such a lovely gentleman!”

All of these problems could have been avoided if Friar Lawrence told the parents that the

two were in love and that they needed to stop fighting. Not only, that but also he is a man of

God, they probably would have listened to him. Other problems would not occur if the nurse

hadn’t given her opinion that she thought it was best for her to marry Paris. Even though these

characters are easy to put the blame on, but some of the blame should go a little too Romeo and

Juliet. They could have figured out a way to keep their marriage going instead of going to “Plan

A” which is to kill themselves. Furthermore, the people in this story could have prevented all of

this from happening.
