THE SENSATION OF COLOURS

The power of the gaz and the power of the colour itself combine to influence the viewers aesthetic experience. This is the reaction the photographer hopes to transmit in his work.. Just like a television uses light waves to project an image, or how a mobile phone uses sound waves to transmit a message, colours too are different waves. We wont react the same way in front of red as we will with purple. Yellow stirs a different feeling than blue. Colours have a profound effect on people. With large-format photographs, the visual field is submerged in the image and the colour. The emotions in the photograph come easily to the surface; we smile, we cry. We are all affected, consciously and unconsciously, by the power of colours.

In my constant search around the world for beauty, my eye always focused on one particular thing: colour. When I set off in search of our planets rapidly-disappearing tribal societies, I got the impression that all the cultures of the world had come together at one point to select, one by one, the different colours of the rainbow. I decided to capture all the shades and hues of the Earth, linking each ethnic group to a colour which was significant for them. I was overwhelmed by the tremendous beauty of these people, by their respect for the environment and by their difficult struggle to maintain their identity and way of life. I travel far off the beaten path to collect these images of our fragile humanity. My greatest wish is for our leaders and presidents to take action and protect these treasures of human existence. Jaime Ocampo-Rangel

Memory of Colors is a portrait of the last authentic ethnic groups on Earth. In 1999, artist Jaime Ocampo Rangel, began his intimate and engaging project. After coming into contact with the Kogui people in his native Colombia, Ocampo Rangel had a spiritual and artistic revelation. He decided to document ethnic groups threatened by globalisation, linking each group to a colour specific to their cultural identity. Each group appears in front of a backdrop that is the same colour as their skin, their clothing, or their spiritual objects. White from their clothing represents the Kogui of Colombia, ochre for the skin of the Namibian Himba, Wayana red, Tuareg turban blue... The unique beauty of each group is revealed through their different colours. Together, the colours create the rainbow of human existence. In many civilisations around the world, the rainbow symbolically represents a bridge connecting the modern world to the world of the past. The rainbow is also the path linking our world on Earth with the world of the Gods. These people who have struggled so hard to hold on to their traditions and way of life, mightnt they have held on to the ability to speak with the Gods as well?
