CONTEST RULES

NEXT LANDMARK - Venice 2012

FLOORNATURE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE CONTEST

Award for first built work and research project by graduates of the new millennium Content and goals
www.floornature.com, the portal of achitecture, design and design culture, in collaboration with Istituto Universitario Salesiano Venezia (IUSVE), Specialised Degree Programme in Integrated Communications and Design (MSTC), is holding the first international contest for young architects: Next Landmark. Spotlighting and acknowledging the merit of unpublished studies and new projects to provide greater visibility and a chance at success for the new generation of architects, promoting what they are doing or planning for contemporary living: an ethical opportunity with a declared interest in the community, helping new architects make progress in their careers.

Aim
The contest is divided into two sections, recognising the general merit of all forms of expression of architecture for the future of the millennium. First Work category: - completed built architectural projects by architects who graduated after 01.01.2000; Research category: - unbuilt projects for urban redevelopment, ideal buildings, graduating theses and theoretical reflection on contemporary living by architects who graduated after 01.01.2000.

Guidelines
Awards will be presented to architectural projects and studies making innovative use of building materials, taking the following parameters into account: - the projects originality; - focus on ecosustainability; - relations between humans, architecture and the land; - technical, aesthetic or conceptual innovation in use of materials. Technical use of materials includes: new materials applied to architecture, use of traditional materials in new ways, building techniques which use materials to improve the performance or living quality of a building or urban space, etc. Aesthetic use of materials refers to: traditional materials used in innovative architectural compositions, conventional materials combined with innovative and high performance materials, local materials used in new ways to support a traditional idiom and become a recognised aesthetic, etc. Conceptual use of materials includes: study of building materials or covering materials in architecture or in forms of communication, urban and social redevelopment studies using high performance or traditional materials, ideologies of design for building materials in contemporary architecture, etc

Material required
Graphic material to be uploaded to enter both categories: First Work category Graphic material to be uploaded online: 1. 4 photographs of the project in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 2. 3 project illustrations containing the entrants choice of layouts, cross sections and elevations in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 3. 3 images considered necessary to best represent the project (rendering, photographs of models, sketches, diagrams, etc.) in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 4. project report of maximum 1800 keystrokes, in English, in .doc format. Research category Unbuilt projects 1. 4 renderings of the work in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 2. 3 project illustrations containing the entrants choice of layouts, cross sections and elevations in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 3. 3 images considered necessary to best represent the project (photographs of models, sketches, diagrams, etc.) in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels 72 dpi; 4. project report of maximum 1800 keystrokes, in English, in .doc format. Theoretical works 1. 6 slides in jpg format 1280X1024 pixels presenting the study containing English text, graphics, illustrations, sketches and whatever material is considered appropriate to represent the study; 2. abstract of the study in English with a maximum of 3500 keystrokes, in .doc format.

Participation
The contest is open to people in all design professions (architects, engineers, landscape architects, urban planners, designers) who graduated after 01.01.2000. Entrants may enter as individuals or groups. In the case of group entries, while recognising all members as authors of the work, the contest organisers require identification of a group head and contact person for the purpose of relations with the project organisers, in whose name the award will be presented if the project wins. Entrants may enter only once, as either an individual or a member of a group. Registration There is no charge for registration. Entrants may register until June 30, 2012 by filling in an online registration form in the registration section of the contest.floornature.com minisite, filling in accreditation information and obtaining an alphanumerical identification code for uploading the required material. Submission of material
To ensure equal opportunities and permit subsequent publication, entrants must comply with the following requirements for submission of material.

The contest is anonymous. To ensure that this is the case, when you fill in the registration form the system will assign an alphanumerical identification code to your project. All material must be uploaded in the special area in the contest.floornature.com minisite, accessible after registering. Once you have received accreditation you will be able to upload the requested material anonymously. All files in the format required by the contest announcement will be automatically renamed by the system with the code assigned to the project to ensure that they will be anonymous when presented to the jury. Once the project has been uploaded, no changes may be made to it. All material must be submitted by June 30, 2012. Material submitted will not be returned. In the case of built projects, entrants must declare that they have obtained the consent of the client and/or owner of the work. Entrants will relieve the contest organisers of all liability to third parties resulting from use of the material submitted according to the terms and for the purposes described in these regulations.

Prize
The jury will award the following prizes: 1st place winner in the First Work category: - 3-day trip to Venice for the opening of the 13th Architecture Biennale; - certificate of winning the First Work category in the Floornature Contest; - exhibition of the project during an evening awards ceremony event held during the opening - of the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice; - video interview with the contest winner (filmed during the evening event to be held in - Venice during the 2012 Architecture Biennale), published and promoted on FN.tv, the video - section of the Floornature.com portal, Facebook, YouTube and in the portals newsletter. - publication of the project in the portal www.floornature.com. 1st place winner in the Research category: - 3-day trip to Venice for the opening of the 13th Architecture Biennale; - certificate of winning the Research category in the Floornature Contest; - exhibition of the project during an evening awards ceremony event held during the opening of the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice; - video interview with the contest winner (filmed during the evening event to be held in Venice during the 2012 Architecture Biennale), published and promoted on FN.tv, the video section of the Floornature.com portal, Facebook, YouTube and in the portals newsletter; - publication of the project in the portal www.floornature.com. 2 special mentions in each category will be awarded to worthy projects, with: - certificate of special mention in the Floornature Contest; - exhibition of the project during an evening awards ceremony event during the opening of the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice; - group video interview with the 4 special mention winners (filmed during the evening event to be held in Venice during the 2012 Architecture Biennale), published and promoted on FN.tv, the video section of the Floornature.com portal, Facebook, YouTube and in the portals newsletter; - publication of the project in the portal www.floornature.com.

The Jury
The Jury selecting the winners, whose judgement is final and cannot be appealed, has been appointed by the organisations and institutions promoting the competition, and has seven members: 1. Treatment of personal data


Personal data provided by candidates with their application to enter the contest will, in accordance with Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003, be used solely for the purposes of contest procedures.

Exclusions
The contest is not open to: members of the Jury or their spouses, relations or inlaws; employees of the organisation holding the contest or of IUSVE. Material not submitted in anonymous form as required by the contest regulations will be excluded.

Results and publication


The Jury will conclude its deliberations by July 15, 2012. The results will be announced to the winners by registered mail and published on the contest.floornature.com minisite. The Jury will publish a concluding report identifying the assessment criteria and the reasons for the choice of the winners. The organisers reserve the right to publish all entries submitted to the contest.floornature.com minisite, and to create a catalogue of the projects as encouragement for young design professionals and in the general interests of the community. By submitting the material, contest entrants give their consent to use of their work for these purposes. Nothing shall be payable to the entrants for these uses of their work.

Acceptance
By submitting their projects, the entrants agree, without reservations, to the conditions set forth in the competition announcement and submit to the decision of the Jury regarding both interpretation of the competition announcement and assessment of the projects submitted.

Information
Members of the Jury may not give entrants any information. Any requests for information must be send to the administrative office at contest@floornature.com
