What is Domestic Abuse?


Domestic abuse is any kind of violence or ill-treatment from family, partners, ex-partners or carers. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone but you do not have to put up with it. It is your right to live free from fear of harm. Domestic abuse can happen in many ways including: Physical abuse punching slapping/hitting pulling hair biting/kicking burning choking Sexual abuse rape unwanted sex acts being forced to watch pornography sending you rude sexual sms/emails Financial Abuse taking away your money taking your benefit payments Emotional abuse verbal abuse being blamed making fun of your speech/signs stopping you from seeing friends or family calling you stupid/thick Threatening/controlling saying he will hurt you stalking/watching or following you controlling where you go or who you talk to locking you in the house/room Using children/pets threaten to take children away threaten to harm children/pets

Why do Deaf women stay with abusive partners?


Many find it hard to tell someone they are being abused because they feel people wont believe them Maybe the abuser promises to change They might feel ashamed They feel its their fault They are scared their children and home will be taken away They are scared that they wont have anywhere to go or have no money They love the abuser and believe he will change They are scared that they might have to leave their family, friends, Deaf community Maybe they worry they will lose their job if people find out These fears are normal and you are not alone. Deaf Hope can help support you.

What can Deaf Hope do for you?


Deaf Hope is deaf women supporting deaf women. We have trained deaf workers who are experienced in domestic abuse and can offer you support with: Safety planning helping you to keep yourself and your children safe. Information on issues like police, solicitors, housing or benefits. Support you and your children to find safe, secure emergency accommodation in a refuge if you want to leave your abusive relationship. Confidential help and support to know what choices you have and how to take the action you want. By listening to you if you just want to talk about whats happening and how you feel.

If any of these are happening to you it is important to remember: 1. You are not alone 2. It is not your fault 3. You DO have a choice and do not have to put up with this 4. Do not feel ashamed this is happening to you 5. You can get help and support and advice about your rights 6. People will believe you 7. Make a safety plan
