Assignment 3 (COMP-304) Dead line:June 25-2012 Transportation Model 1. A manufacturer wants to ship 22 loads of his product as shown below.

The matrix gives the kilometers from sources of supply to the destinations.

D1 S1 S2 S3 Demand 5 4 8 4

D2 8 7 4 4

D3 6 7 6 5

D4 6 6 6 4

D5 3 5 4 8

Supply 8 5 9

Shipping costs are Rs 10 per load per km. What shipping schedule should be used to minimize total transportation cost? [Ans: Rs 920] 2. Moon tobacco company purchases tobacco and stores in warehouses located in four cities A, B, C and D with capacities (in tons) of 90, 50, 80 and 60 respectively. The warehouses supply the tobacco to cigarette companies N, J and K with demands (in tons) of 120, 100 and 110 respectively. The following railroad shipping costs per ton (in hundred rupees) have been determined.
N A B C D 7 12 7 9 J 10 9 3 5 K 15 4 11 7

Because of railroad construction, shipments are temporarily prohibited from warehouse in city A to cigarette company N. (HINT: Use M a very very large transportation cost to represent this square instead of Rs 7 as given above in table) a. Find the optimum distribution for Moon Tobacco Company using VAM to develop initial solution. b. Are there multiple optimum solutions? If yes, identify them. 3. A company has 4 manufacturing plants and 5 warehouses. Each plant manufactures the same product which is sold at different prices at each warehouse. The cost of manufacturing and cost of raw materials are different in each plant due to various factors. The capacities of the plants are also different as given below.
Plant 1 Manufacturing cost (Rs per unit) Raw material cost (Rs per unit) Capacity 12 8 100 2 10 7 200 3 8 7 120 4 8 5 80

The company has 5 warehouses. The sales price, unit transportation costs and demands are given in the following table:
Warehouse Transportation cost (Rs per unit) 1 A B C D E 4 8 2 10 2 2 7 9 7 7 5 3 4 7 6 5 8 4 3 8 10 8 9 Sale Price Demand (Rs per unit) 30 32 28 34 30 80 120 150 70 90

a. Formulate this problem as a transportation problem to maximize profit. b. Find the solution using VAM c. Test for optimality and find the optimal solution. HINT: Unit profit = Unit selling price Unit manufacturing cost Unit raw material cost - Unit transportation cost.

4. A department has 5 employees with 5 jobs to be performed. The time (in hours) each person will take to perform each job is given below:
Jobs 1 A B C D E 10 3 10 7 7 2 5 9 7 11 9 Employees 3 13 18 2 9 10 4 15 13 2 7 4 5 16 6 2 12 12

How should the jobs be allocated, one per employee, so as to minimize the total manhours? 5. A marketing manager has five salesmen and sales districts. Considering the capabilities of the salesmen and nature of districts, the marketing manager estimates that sales per month (in hundred rupees) for each salesman in each district would be as follows:

Salesmen A 1 2 3 4 5 32 40 41 22 29 B 38 24 27 38 33 C 40 28 33 41 40

Districts D 28 21 30 36 35 E 40 36 37 36 39

Find the assignment of salesmen to districts that will result in maximum sales. 6. (Travelling salesman problem): Give the optimum schedule for the following travelling salesman distance- matrix and also find the minimum distance.
A B C D E A 6 10 14 12 B 12 11 17 13 C 24 16 22 23 D 25 18 18 25 E 15 7 12 16 -
