Presentation Outline
Energy Access and Scenario in Nepal
Key considerations
Focus on Lighting solutions for energy saving NEA and its efficiency program
System is predominantly Hydro( ROR Type) No coal and natural gas resources
NEA is a Vertically Integrated Utility responsible for Generation, Transmission and Distribution
COMPARISION
Source Traditional Petroleum Electricity Coal Renewable Consumption 322,105 TJ; 87.69% 30,12 TJ ; 8.2% 6,673 TJ; 1.82 % 6,459 TJ; 1.75% 1,955 TJ; 0.53 % Expenditure 3.65 BNR; 7% 33.31 BNR; 64% 14.31 BNR; 27% 0.79 BNR; 2% BNR: Billion Nepalese Rupees
Generation Consumption
Demand is escalated by
Supply is limited by Ageing Run-of River type ( which are seasonal) Addition of power in the Grid annually is 5% or less.
Solar Alternatives
Street Lighting Solar PV Grid
Average demand saving = 24W per CFL Average energy saving = 23 kWh/year/CFL Average CFLs per household = 3.15
From this saving in capacity and energy, we could electrify 20,000 households more. Observations
Market Transformation and now people buy CFL on their own to save electricity bills.
About 750,000 CFL will be installed mostly in rural areas with no cost to the consumers.
Program Benefits
Access to Electricity for more people less captive plant by consumers Low electricity bill Market transformation to CFL Loss Reduction
Develop programs to educate/aware consumers about the use of EE lighting and appliances. (People are ignorantly profligate).

Efficient lighting and Appliance are available at affordable cost , more people buy and the more sustained the business becomes.
More Access from Saving: Saving is used for more electrification or can be utilised for other productive end-uses.
