AAP CA3 June 2012 District Report

Successful Chapter Program & Challenge

Chapter project to highlight this year: (250 words max) AAP CA3 is the Countywide Coordinator for First 5 Commission of San Diegos Healthy Development Services (HDS) program. We have overseen the development and implementation of the program which works with the existing system of care and provides services for children with mild to moderate developmental concerns. The services include developmental screening, assessment and treatment, behavioral screening, assessment, and treatment, parent education and care coordination. AAP CA3 planned and conducted community wide trainings on developmental and behavioral topics, which include screening and assessment tools, behavioral curricula, best practices, referral pathways, cultural competence, and community resources. We conducted 7 trainings, speaking to over 215 community partners. Participants include developmental and behavioral service providers, public health nurses, pediatricians, and other community partners that are involved in the developmental system of care. In FY 2010 2011, HDS served approximately 36,338 children and parents which represent an increase of 12% from last fiscal year. Of those services, HDS provided developmental services to 8,572 children and their parents. Care Coordination was provided to 10,148 children and their parents families throughout the community. Over 8,000 children and parents received parent education, support, and empowerment services. AAP CA3 continues to facilitate all meeting to coordinate services across the regions of San Diego County. We continue to create and refine clinical pathways for behavioral services which include the use of Ages and Stages Questionnaire Social Emotional (ASQ SE) screening and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Based on the screen and/or assessment children and their families are assigned treatment levels. Nearly 7,000 children, parents, and child care providers received behavioral services in FY 2010 2011.

What went well in your chapter that is on the AAP agenda? (250 words max) AAP CA3s Healthy Development Services Project. See above. What other project was successful to increase member value for your chapter this year? (250 words max) Our bi weekly e newsletter, Coastal Currents is emailed to about 500 chapter members and community partners. We have had over 20,000 hits on our website which represents an increase of 2000 from last year. We sponsored 2 CME events in 2011: 26th Annual Advances in the Practice of Pediatrics San Diego and our 14th Annual School Health Leadership Conference. The attendance at each event was 245 and 85, respectively. We held our 5th Annual Chapter Picnic in September 2011, outdoors near the coastline of Mission Bay. The event, with an attendance of 100 people. Our membership enjoys this outdoor, family friendly event. We have focused on family friendly events to include pediatricians families. We received funding from National AAPs SOYP for young physicians events. We had an evening event at a local brewery restaurant and a summer catered event at a Board Members pool clubhouse with a water safety theme. Both events were family friendly. Our two large programs, Healthy Development Services and Reach Out and Read, continue to engage pediatricians in their offices. Reach Out and Read San Diego has great success in pediatricians offices with 79 active sites, involving approximately 200 pediatricians.

We continue to support a life after residency event for current pediatric residents with the UCSD residency training program. We support an annual medical student event to introduce the practice of pediatrics. We have sponsored annual, informal dinners with residents and our chapter officers and a local pediatric leader from a community clinic, to discuss aspects of job searching, contracts, interviewing, and career choices.

What were the major conflicts or barriers to your chapter that has stymied progress this year? (250 words max) Chapter Challenge: Young Physician Involvement Though we have had several successful applications to National AAP for Young Physician Grants, novel ideas for networking, gatherings and parties, to date, we have only found one model that has been even somewhat successful in getting YPs (and their families) to attend. In the past year we have organized the following events, their outcome indicated: YP Young Physician Get together at a local brewery. We invited the YP and their families and this by far has been the successful model for our YP events. When they were able to bring their families, we had the largest turn out. Held a Poolside party with a water safety theme. We had moderate attendance, though we didnt apply for YP funds this past cycle, focusing on residents instead. We have had many discussions as the Board level to assess this events. We have a very active Young Physician in our chapter who is assisting with these events and also starting to interface with the residents, particularly 3rd years, to get them interested in the AAP and chapter activities. Our hope is that is by connecting with resident physicians during their training, we will increase their interest in the AAP when they are YPs.

What is the primary goal for your chapter this year? (250 words max) Chapter involvement and membership are priorities for our chapter. One tactic is to get representation from each health system in San Diego County to serve on each chapter committee as a way to increase chapter involvement and membership. We have also started sending all new members, and renewing members in 2012, a member packet with a welcome letter, a chapter water bottle, pen and sticky note pad. We have also implemented sending birthday emails each month to members with a birthday that month.
