Household electricity consumption in ASEAN: 144,038 GWh in 2007 Air conditioners account for 50% or more of total household electricity consumption in most ASEAN countries Air conditioners consume 57.1 TWh of electricity per year in ASEAN Energy savings potential (source: UNEP/ICA 2010):
Harmonization of ASEAN MEPS to Thailands current MEPS (EER of 2.8): 1,928 GWh per year; 0.9 million tons of CO2 emissions reduction per year Harmonization of ASEAN MEPS to Chinas current MEPS (EER of 3.2): 5,373 GWh per year; 2.7 million tons of CO2 emissions reduction per year

Objectives
Long-term objective: increase the share of energy efficient household appliances in ASEAN as a means to reduce electricity consumption and greenhouse gases emissions from the residential sector Specific objective: harmonize energy efficiency (EE) standards in ASEAN for household appliances and develop MEPS and HEPS (Higher Energy Performance Standard) Supports ASEAN vision: AEC by 2015 First appliance: air conditioners

Regional survey on energy savings potential and current status in EE standards and labeling programs for ACs and refrigerators completed by UNEP/ICA in November 2010 Strategic roadmap for the harmonization of EE standards in ASEAN drafted by UNEP/ICA in January 2011 Stakeholders consultation workshop organized by UNEP/ICA in January 2011 in Kuala Lumpur Strategic roadmap for the harmonization of EE standards in ASEAN approved by ASEAN EE&C SSN on 27 May 2011 in Singapore Kick-off meeting organized on 17-18 January 2012 in Jakarta Currently looking for sources of funding for the program Next step: first meetings of the Technical Working Group and Policy Working Group (tentatively August 2012 in Bangkok)
