Brownie Troop
works on badges
Howard City Brownie Troop 4107 is a troop of 30 kin-
dergartens, frst- and second-graders from McNaughton El-
ementary.
While working on a couple of badges, the Brownie Quest
and the Philanthropist Badge, they decided to see if they
could do a food drive completion among the classes at Mc-
Naughton; with all the items going to Helping Hands in
Howard City. The class that brought in the most items would
be treated to an ice cream party. After returning from spring
break, the Brownies were given the OK to do this.
The troop collected food from the class rooms for nine
days. More than 2868 items were collected. Mrs. Moggs
class came from behind and took the ice cream party. Due to
the great response from the teachers, students and parents,
every class was given a treat for their effort. The troop would
like to thank everyone who helped make this a wonderfully
successful service project. The girls have plans to hopefully
do this again next year.

OBITUARY

Eunice Irwin
Eunice Irwin, 93, of Morley, passed away June 4, 2012,
at her residence.
She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Howard City, the
daughter of Glenn and May (Kraft) Rineberger. Eunice
loved to knit and read. She loved Christmas Eve each and
every year. Her house was small but as the family grew
each year, they sat closer and closer to one another but
it held a special place in her heart to have Christmas at
her house. Eunice loved baking blueberry pies. A few
years back she wasnt feeling up to making pies, so we all
brought our own. We knew they would not be as good as
hers but she said they were very good, but we missed her
special touch.
Surviving are her children, Arthea Watson, Lynn
(Carol) Irwin, Marv Irwin and Carolie (Julius) Nash;
and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur and a
daughter, Marcia Epperson.
Private services will take place as to her wishes. Ar-
rangements were entrusted to the Heckman Funeral
Home.

United Methodist Church, located on the corner of Church and
Main streets in Cedar Springs.

Benefit Concert for the Historic Kent Theatre
to feature Switchback
With Everly Brothers harmonies and FitzGeralds whirl-
wind and soulful guitar and mandolin work, Switchback romps
and reels with audacity and talent. Performing Songwriter
Magazine
CEDAR SPRINGS The Cedar Springs Theatre Association
recently announced a special beneft concert by Switchback
featuring Martin McCormack, Brian FitzGerald and percussion-
ist Nick Hirka at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, in the historic
Kent Theatre, downtown Cedar Springs.
This beneft performance for the Historic Kent Theatre will
feature an eclectic mix of folk, country, blues and Irish music,
plus some 1930s and 1940s jazz and a selection of songs from
Switchbacks award winning catalog of more than 300 original
tunes.
Switchbacks concerts are always a crowd pleaser with
lots of audience involvement, colorful stories of their travels
around the U.S. and abroad, and a healthy dose of comedy
thrown in for good measure. They dont play off a set-list, so
the eclectic mix of tunes is like no other show Ive ever seen,
said one reporter. They started the set with several of their
own original tunes, then delivered two heart-pounding Irish
rebel songs, a awe inspiring performance of Danny Boy, and
ended the set with Folsom Prison Blues and the Beatles Hide
Your Love Away. One minute I was clapping along and the
next I had a tear in my eye. They have a way of connecting
with the audience on each and every song, no matter what the
genre. Another reporter in Chicago wrote, I was told Switch-
back fuses Folk, Irish, Cajun and Blues musical styles. I wasnt
convinced, so I went to check them out. I walked in the door a
doubting Thomas and became an immediate fan.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for adults
and $10 for students. Tickets are on sale now in Cedar Springs
at the Independent Bank, Cedar Springs Library, Chase Bank
and at the Kent Theatre box offce.
For more info call The Kent Theatre at (616) 696.SHOW
(7469) or visit www.kenttheatre.org.

Bad language. On April 17, 2012, in the case of the
People of the State of Michigan vs Koon, the Mich-
igan Court of Appeals eloquently criticized and
somewhat claried the Legislatures poorly drafted
medical marijuana law (called the MMMA).
The arrest. When Koon was pulled over for driv-
ing 88 miles per hour in a 55 mile an hour zone, he
smelled like booze. The arresting ofcer did a pat-
down. Koon admitted to boozing. Koon consented
to the patdown. Koon took his marijuana pipe out
of his pocket. Koon admitted to smoking marijuana
about four-ve hours previously.
Controlling the substance. The Legislature has
not removed marijuana from the Schedule 1 con-
trolled substances list. So the ofcer had reason
to suspect Koon could be under the inuence of a
Section 1 controlled substance. A blood test identi-
ed the presence of THC in Koons system. THC is
the chemical in marijuana which causes the high.
Blowing smoke. Koon thought that because the
MMMA prevents prosecution for possession, he
could not be prosecuted for possessing the pipe
nor for possessing marijuana, nor for possessing its
residue inside his body. That was a clever argu-
ment, but a loser.
Guilty as charged. Koon was guilty. As the nal
footnote to the Appeals Courts written decision,
Justice Sawyer wrote:
Defendant contends that the MMMA grants him
the right to internally possess marijuana and,
therefore, as long as he does not break any other
laws, he can go about his day-to-day activities, in-
cluding operating a motor vehicle. Defendant fur-
ther argues that as long as the marijuana does not
affect his ability to operate a motor vehicle, he is
immune from prosecution.
Like most individuals, the defendant misconstrues
the MMMA. The MMMA does not (give anyone) a
right to use marijuana, nor does it grant any citizen
the right to use or possess marijuana. While this
may seem strange to anyone who has encountered
the act, it is the process set up by what many have
referred to as an inartfully drafted act.
What the MMMA does is set up a process where
(carded) individuals cannot be arrested or pros-
ecuted for their law-breaking. These immuni-
ties from lawbreaking are very limited in scope. In
essence, defendant is asking this Court to extend
these protections to other activities, such as operat-
ing a motor vehicle We respectfully decline; it
is the Legislatures job to expand the law, not the
courts responsibility.
Possessions illegal. In short, possession of mari-
juana is illegal by law.
But medical users are special. They may safely
possess, and use. The medical marijuana law prom-
ises that medical marijuana users will not be pros-
ecuted for illegal possession.
Driving under the inuence? Public Act 368 of
1978 has not changed, A person, whether licensed
or not, shall not operate a vehicle upon a highway
or other place open to the general public if the
person has in his or her body any amount of a con-
trolled substance listed in schedule 1 of the public
health code. Even if Koon was not being inu-
enced by so much as a slight amount of THC in his
system, its not the drugs inuence that matters.
The law is written to prohibit driving with a con-
trolled substance in your body.
The distinction is presence, not inuence. Mr.
Koon was not prosecuted for possessing marijuana,
not prosecuted for using marijuana, not for being
inuenced by it. He was prosecuted for driving
with marijuana in his body. Put that in your pipe.

By Jeanne L. Jerow, Attorney, Counselor, Mediator Howard City This beautiful camper is in excellent condition used spar-
ingly since purchased new. Only one owner. Sleeps 2-3
adults, or 2 adults and 2 children. Comes with sway bar,
heavy duty hitch, electric jack, and level. Has a wet bath-
room, desk, dinette, full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, oven,
and many cabinets for storage. Everything works perfectly
and is very clean. Has propane heat with a thermostat, air
conditioner, and electronic panel for checking fresh, gray, and
black water levels. Is approximately 6000-6500lbs when fully
loaded. Tows beautifully, you'll forget it's back there. The
International CCD is the higher end of the Airstream trailers,
so this trailer is built to last and has beautiful finishes. More

The Arthritis Cure
Many years ago I read, The Arthritis Cure by Joseph Theodosakis MD. It was my rst understanding that one could do something about
joint pain besides taking Motrin and Steroids. Since then I have found many great ways to actually rebuild the joints. This condition has a
long functional period before actual pathology or damage occurs in the joints. But even the pathology can be reversed in many cases.
Not all joint pain is arthritis, but that is what we tend to call it. A joint has many parts and to x the problem each needs to be
addressed. The bone ends are covered with cartilage. This is covered with a slippery membrane call the synovium. Surrounding each joint
are the capsule and ligaments that hold the bones in proper alignment. This lining of the joint capsule is lled with a lubricating gel made
from hyaluronic acid. Running across the joints are tendons that connect the muscle to the bones. The bones are covered by a membrane
call the periostium to which the tendons attach. Inside the joints, underlying the tendons are bursa. These are small gel lled sacks that
act like pulleys to lubricate a variety of structures to make for smooth pain-free operation. A problem with any of these tissues can cause
pain in the joints.
The most common joint pains are caused by wear and tear of the cartilages, ligaments, and tendons that hold the joints together. It
is important to note that all of these tissues are made of collagen which tends to have very poor blood supple. As a result, most of the
nutrients are supplied by diffusion through the tissues and not through tiny capillaries like muscle, bone, skin, etc. So, collagen structures
tend to repair slowly.
The slight concussion of mild exercise supports this diffusion of nutrients.
To make collagen our body goes through many steps. Two of these steps produce chondroitin and glucosamine. If we add these
directly to our diet we can increase the production of collagen and repair our cartilages faster. Dietary sources are Jell-O or gelatin and
animal cartilage or gristle from meat. Most of us do not eat much Jell-O and most throw away the cartilage. So adding a supplement
containing these will be very helpful (avoid chondroitin if you have a high PSA or prostate cancer). The third ingredient needed is
MSM. This helps break down the damaged collagen so it can be replaced with new. All three are in Osteo-Bi-Flex or Ever Flex by NSP.
Another important nutrient is Omega 3 from sh oil or ax seed oil. This acts as an anti-inammatory and also helps in the production of
the lubricating gel in the joint. Both, sh oil and axseed oil have benets, so we often recommend taking one or two of each once or
twice daily. The production of lubricating gel can also increased by dietary hyaluronic acid. We like Baxyl or Hyaluronan which is a stable,
absorbable form.
If there are spurs (calcication of the ligament and tendon attachments) present, the joints will be stiff and
painful, especially in the mornings. Small hard nodules may occur over the knuckles. These can be dissolved by
using herbal Hydrangea three times per day and Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C or Heckla Lava 6C one
per day. Depending on how many spurs are present, 80% of them can be completely dissolved in three to six
months.
Taking these supplements ([Chondroitin, Glucosamine, and MSM-repair the cartilage], [Omega3 Oil and
Hyaluronan-make more lubricating gel], [Hydrangea, and Hom. Calc.Carb 6C or Heckla Lava 6C-dissolve bone
spurs]), following the blood type diet (to remove the inammatory foods from the diet), and doing mild exercise
(stretching and yoga type exercise, no high impact) will cure most cases of joint pain in three to six months.
Fortunately, you do not have to take these supplements forever. It is a good idea to take photos of your ngers
before you start. Send them to the Healing Center so we can see changes too.
