Associate Deans Welcome

Welcome to the MBA Programme at the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB). Since 1986 it has been producing individuals that lead, manage and impact change in leading organisations. Our graduates are committed to excel and the skill set imparted to them through the rigorous regime of case method of teaching and the principle of general management gives them the requisite training to do so. The SDSB faculty consists of both renowned researchers and industry experts. This amalgamation is particularly beneficial to our teaching pedagogy. The case method of teaching is a holistic approach to learning, enhancing the graduates comprehensive managerial calibre. It combines theory with practice in a classroom environment and brings the diverse professional, academic and cultural backgrounds of the individuals to the fore in a joint learning experience that is both multi-disciplinary and meaningful. In doing so, the case method of teaching integrates a students cross functional learning and makes him/her understand how complex management issues and decisions have a bearing across an organisation. It is this understanding and its application that makes our graduates the prime choice of employers the world over and has made the LUMS MBA the best programme in the country in less than two decades. The Competency and Professional Development Modules, a new initiative, are especially aimed at enhancing the soft skills of the graduates. A series of guest lectures, field visits, social emersion programmes, networking sessions with industry experts and various student centric activities keep the individuals in touch with the market and build their skill set accordingly. To ensure that a global perspective is given to the students while retaining local grounding, a close linkage with various research centres of the SDSB is established. This linkage provides a relevant and up to date curriculum. Our region contains one fifth of the world population, understanding this unique position in todays global village and the opportunities that its markets have in the future, are key to identifying a global management career in the future. We also have representation from various countries of South Asia and various student exchange programmes across the globe give students the opportunity to add to their international exposure. We have a dedicated MBA Placement Office that facilitates the placement of the graduates in careers of their choice. They organise various networking and mentoring sessions to expose the students to the challenges ahead of them and to prepare them to face those challenges squarely. The MBA Placement Office works very closely with the industry requirements and helps students make an informed choice. Our strong alumni presence throughout the region and the world speaks of the achievements of the graduates. Through their constant support in the guest speaker sessions as well as linkages with the industry, they are offered an opportunity to give back to their alma mater while partaking in the exemplary research being carried out by the faculty. MBA at LUMS opens many doors for its graduates. We look for strong individuals who believe in themselves and whose ethical standards and values reflect their integrity and morals. I invite you to go through this brochure and learn about our MBA Programme. I am confident, that you will agree that LUMS-SDSB MBA Programme is the right programme for you. Associate Dean

Honing the Thinking Process

Honing the Thinking Process

At the SDSB we instill in our students an ardor to develop specific skills to better their performance in the real world. We believe in providing our students with a feel for applied classroom learning, and there is no better way to do so than through the Case Method of Teaching. It introduces students to the underlying principles of management and decision making. Whatever field they eventually enter, we strive to provide students with an excellent training ground. Whether studying cases related to human resources, entrepreneurship or company/customer relationships, students are exposed to a wide-ranging array of situations. This situational learning enhances their thinking capacity and inculcates in them the imperative that managers are involved in every aspect of decision making in an organisation. The cases teach through practice, not theory. Class discussions and arguments with peers, hone students intellectual capacity and conceptual understanding and build their decision making capabilities. The Case Method proves to be an extremely advantageous as well as engaging way to learn. Competency and Professional Development Modules have been especially added to enhance the soft skills of the students. They learn valuable communication skills, are able to work under pressure and gain the confidence to take risks in the real world. Student centric societies, guest speaker sessions, leadership and professional development modules are all geared to give a competitive advantage to the graduates in the professional world. A global outlook with local grounding gives the graduates the opportunity to make their mark in the real world.

The LUMS MBA develops leaders with comprehensive managerial caliber. The Case Method of Teaching prepares you to make decisions in the face of conflicting data, complex politics, intense financial pressure and various market scenarios, while following impossible deadlines. You must defend your choices amongst a group of peers coming from a variety of academic backgrounds, highly intellectual and extremely competitive for over 500 times in the span of the two years MBA. Negotiation skills, decision making ability and to think on your feet are some traits that we pick along the way. Ammar Talaat MBA 2009 Manager Strategic Planning Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) The LUMS MBA trains and equips its students to become savvy business leaders who can adapt to the ever-changing market environment vigilantly and productively. We are taught by highly accomplished and motivated faculty on a purpose-built campus whose state of the art facilities support the case based teaching pedagogy, creating a highly conducive learning environment. The MBA Project

The MBA Project is mandatory in the second year and is equivalent to two full courses. It is a practical application of teamwork, acquired skills and concepts, as well as a good assimilation of all fields of management. A real life client presents a managerial issue to a team of 4-5 MBA students and over the year, the group has to present a comprehensive report to the client and is graded accordingly. The Project is an excellent application of what is learnt throughout the programme. It is an all-encompassing assignment combining decision making ability, collaboration, working under pressure and an integrated approach towards management.

The LUMS MBA transformed me into a fierce competitor. The two years rigorous course work complemented by the CPD Module infused a unique entrepreneurial spirit and energy in me that distinguishes me from my peers at my work place. Usman Khalid MBA 2008 Manager Marketing Monsanto
