Introduction to Pinch Analysis

a workshop for engineers and process designers concerned with achieving optimum energy efficiency in industrial processes

Energy Efficiency is...a universal tool to improve industry competitiveness and to ensure a more sustainable energy future. Anwar Abdul Rahman
Comments from a 2007 Participant: A great preparation for {my companys} new heat integration initiative.

Proven techniques save 15-20% of energy useand sometimes more!

The workshop leader, Alan Rossiter, is an internationally recognized leader in industrial energy management. As President of Rossiter & Associates, Delegates to previous courses have come from ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Dow Dr. Rossiter consults with major oil and Chemical, Chevron, Valero, and other chemical companies, as well as government operating companies and engineering agencies, in industrial energy management firms. issues. Dr. Rossiter holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge, and he has contributed more than 50 articles in energy management and waste minimization, including the McGraw-Hill book, Waste Minimization through Process Design (1995), and the Energy Management article 1 the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of in Chemical Technology, 5th edition (2005).

Introduction to Pinch Analysis

INTRODUCTION Pinch analysis is a powerful tool for improving the design of industrial processes, based on a simple and elegant application of basic thermodynamics. Its main use is in improving energy efficiency through heat integration for continuous plant operations, but it also has applications in distillation system design, debottlenecking, mass transfer, waste minimization and other areas. Introduction to Pinch Analysis is a 1 day workshop designed to present the main principles of pinch analysis and to inform delegates about the scope, potential and limitations of this important methodology. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Participants attending the program will learn how to: Identify situations where pinch analysis is an appropriate tool to use. Construct composite curves and grand composite curves. Calculate energy targets and multiple utility targets. Design and simplify heat exchanger networks using pinch principles. Apply pinch analysis to retrofit situations Organize a successful pinch project. Certificates of participation are issued for 12 professional development hours (12 PDH or 1.2 CEU). Valid in most states for Professional Engineers continuing education.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY In addition to lectures and discussions, the delegates will learn by active participation through the use of problem-solving exercises, hands-on use of computer tools, software demonstrations, group discussions, and analysis of real-life case studies. Delegates will receive a copy of mini-PinchExcel, a simple pinch targeting spreadsheet.

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is aimed at energy managers and engineers involved in plant operation, troubleshooting and process design in the process industries, including oil refining, chemicals & petrochemicals, pulp & paper and food & beverages.
COURSE SCHEDULE Thurs May 1: 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Fri. May 2: 8:15 a.m. to 12 noon Registration & light breakfast from 7:45 a.m. Lunch is included May 1 Venue: Houston Engineering & Scientific Society, 5430 Westheimer, Houston, TX 77056.

Introduction to Pinch Analysis

PROGRAM SUMMARY This workshop will improve delegates understanding of why certain process designs are inherently inefficient. Tools are presented to identify the inefficiencies and improve heat integration to achieve optimum energy efficiency in refining, chemical & petrochemical, pulp & paper and food processing plants. DAY 1 1. Background Heat integration is a key component of industrial energy efficiency. In this first section we explore some of the basic principles of heat recovery, and define the heat exchanger network (HEN) design problem. 2. Energy Targeting and Composite Curves The Heat Exchanger Network Design Problem Constructing Composite Curves DTmin, Qh,min, Qc,min Capital/Energy Trade-offs This section introduces the key pinch tools for determining realistic targets for energy consumption using fundamental thermodynamic principles. 3. Heat Exchanger Network Design The Pinch Principle The Grid Diagram CP rules Loops and Paths There are several rules for designing HENS. This section introduces the rules, and shows how to apply them to simple problems. 4. Multiple Utility Targeting and the Grand Composite Curve The Problem Table and Multiple Utility Targets The Grand Composite Curve Segmented Utilities Economics often dictates that we use several different utilities (e.g., steam at a number of different pressure levels) to supply heat and cooling to a process. Section 4 introduces principles and tools that can be used to optimize the consumption of each of these utilities. DAY 2 5. HEN Design for Multiple Utility Problems Multiple Pinches on the Grid Diagram Balancing Heat Loads with Utilities In Section 5 we extend the HEN design principles and rules that we learned in Day 1 and apply them to situations where multiple heating and cooling utilities are available. 6. Retrofit Design Identifying Inefficiencies 3 Simple Techniques for Improving Existing Process Designs Many companies wish to enhance the energy efficiency of their existing facilities, and this presents significantly different challenges to new designs. In Section 6, we identify those differences and introduce simple techniques for improving existing plant designs using pinch principles. 7. Industry Examples In this final section describe how to carry out a pinch study in practice, and show the results of a number of pinch projects from oil refining, chemicals and other industries. Another great Rossiter & Associates course, Industrial Energy Management in the 21st Century, will be held April 2830, also at the Houston Engineering & Scientific Society. If you are involved in industrial energy management, troubleshooting, process operations and/or design this course contains essential principles to enable you to achieve maximum energy efficiency.
