The Grimlords MC hosted their
second annual charity run for
AYUDA at Plainview Lakes in
Tornillo over the May 19th week-
end. The run has regular stops all
over El Paso, but is meant to be an
all night affair. Bikers are encour-
aged to bring their tents, camping
gear, and most especially, families
to the party. Food and sodas were
provided, but the attendees are en-
couraged to fish at the lakes and
cook their food on the grill while
listening to the various bands and
Djs provided by Three G Promo-
tions that could be heard far into
the countryside.
AYUDA is a non-profit commu-
nity organization that helps fami-
lies in the San Elizario, Clint, and
Fabens area and provides educa-
tion and community support.
Olivia Figueroa has been the di-
rector for the past two years, but
has been involved with AYUDA
for the past 18 years. She stated
that this run will provide much
needed funds that will go towards
providing Thanksgiving turkeys
and Christmas baskets to the less
fortunate in the community.
Tavo Morales, president and
founder of the Grimlords, would
like to thank all who attended (and
survived!) the all night party.
"There is no other event like this
in all El Paso. You can come and
party with the whole family, listen
to music all night, enjoy the fresh
air and beautiful countryside and
still be close to home!" Every
year, Tavo wants to make the run

This is a specific time of the year

for a regional ride. You could call
the next four months our “instabil-
ity” time of the year – when storms
grow and thrive.
Our Monsoon will officially arrive
Friday, June 15. As you may recall,
this is the fourth year that we offi-

The annual Run For the Wall
transnational ride passed through El
Paso on Friday, May 18th. The ride
is an annual charity-oriented run
starting in California and ending up
at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial
in Washington, D.C. Riders are en-
couraged to start at the beginning of
the 10 day ride, but many riders are
picked up along the way, usually
ending with more than 300,000 rid-
ers in DC. Riders stop along the
route at veteran's memorials to pay
tribute to those who served and
never came back. The mission state-
ment for the event is "to promote
healing among all veterans" and to
remember and honor POWs, those
KIA, and to support all military per-
sonnel.

The ride made an overnight stop in
Las Cruces and more than 500 bik-
ers passed through El Paso on I-10.
Riders from various clubs, mostly
veteran's clubs, met up at Barnett
HD and walked to the Lee Trevino
overpass to wave flags and salute
the passing riders. The patches in-
cluded Rolling Thunder, American
Legion, Marines MC, but many just
came to be part of the greeting. The
attendees waved the American flag
for passerbys, but all stood at atten-
tion when the RFTW riders rode un-
derneath the overpass. One local
stated that it was good to see this
many people attending. One local
rider with a RFTW patch summed
up the importance of their atten-
dance, "It never fails. Through
every town I've been through every
year I've ridden (he had 4 participa-
tion patches), I see these flags and I
get choked up, every single time."

German MC celebrated its 25th anniversary in late April. German MC is made
up of soldiers from the German Air Defense Center here in El Paso. It has grown
as a biker club from the original 4 members to all those you see now. The ride
covered all El Paso and ended up at the Moose Lodge out in far east El Paso for
a fun filled night of celebration featuring German beer and bratwurst, of course!

a Defining
Statement

The 550-horsepower XKR-S is a
defining statement. It's not so wild
and crazy as it could be, but it has
masterful in-house engineering
that surely grants it recognition as
a "supercar." With 502 foot-
pounds of torque and six-speed,
paddle-shift automatic transmis-
sion, Jaguar says it will launch to
60 mph in 4.2 seconds. It has a top
speed of 186 mph.

The British brand appears to have
some deep-pocket support from
Indian owner Tata Motors. At least
Tata has a hands-off approach to
Jaguar, and its lineup is as fresh
and strong as it ever has been,
company employees say. Adding
to the lineup will be a two-seat
convertible (with a proper manual
transmission) coming out next
year (with a coupe version not out
of the question).
The drive route was a nearly 300-
mile round trip east from San
Diego to NAF El Centro, where
we made speed runs. The "track"
was on 5,280 feet of the main
9,500-foot concrete runway,
which is 200 feet wide. In that
mile, the supercharged Jag can
reach 170 mph — which also hap-
pens to be the liftoff speed for an
F-18, our presenters said.
At the car's top speed of 186 mph,
it takes one second to cover the
length of one football field. By the
time the driver lifts off the throttle
to engage braking, the car has
passed one football field.
Things happen fast at 170 mph. To
make it drivable at racetrack
speeds, nearly every piece of a
stock XKR was touched or rein-
vented to create "a much more
sporting direction for a GT car,"
said Andy Lowis, 34, an engineer
and sports car project leader. The
XKR-S would have a duality of
purpose, he said, but nothing dis-
ruptive to a good driving experi-
ence.
On the way to making its most
powerful production Jaguar, much
attention was given to aerodynam-
ics. Overall lift was reduced by 26
percent. Those big-cheek cutouts
at the leading edge of the front
fenders may look like brake-cool-
ing vents, but they are for stability.
At 170 mph, I was praising those
engineers for the extra down force
— and also for the disc brakes, 15
inches in the front and 14 inches
in the rear.
There is a "sport" mode, which
heightens performance and opens
a bypass valve in the exhaust for
reduced back pressure and an ex-
haust note that is animal. The
steering is a standout feature —
light to the touch but refined and
consistent to the millimeter input.
Most grand-touring cars with this
much power distribute through all-
wheel drive. Jaguar puts all the
punch to the rear and uses electro-
mechanical devices to keep the
tires in contact with pavement.
The active differential can go from
open to locked and anywhere in
between to monitor the handling
behavior of the car. "It's subtle in-
tervention," Lowis said. "The
driver won't know it's happening."
Pirelli whipped up special com-
pounding for its PZero tires
(255/35 ZR20 at the front and
295/30 ZR20 at the rear), and
lightweight wheels save a few
pounds.
The interior is richly appointed
with leather just about every-
where. The convertible top cycles
in 18 seconds (and at speeds to 15
mph), and the soft-top is so well-
insulated that the cabin is as quiet
as a hardtop. And the convertible
has almost 3 inches more rear
headroom than the coupe.
There seem to be no heinous er-
gonomic issues with placement of
controls or activation. But the shift

grabbing this Growler by the
scruff, it would be reassuring to
have the bolt-action engagement
of an old-fashioned gearshift
lever.
The fuel economy of 15 mpg city,
22 highway may not overwhelm,
but after 300 miles and two speed
runs, I returned to the hotel with
103 miles of fuel remaining and
an average mpg of 14.2. That's not
a bad day for driving to the track
and back home.
