HP 6Gb/s SAS Storage Solutions Family

Data sheet
The first generation of the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface was introduced by the storage industry in 2005 to improve the performance of the parallel SCSI interface. As SAS evolved from SCSI, it was believed to be inherently robust and reliable. In addition, the compatibility of SAS with storage devices that use the Serial ATA (SATA) interface made it possible for companies to implement a mix of SAS and SATA devices according to their budgetary constraints and application needs. The SAS interface also received widespread support from the semiconductor industry, hard drive suppliers and server/storage providers. The first generation SAS interface supports up to 3Gb/s data rate performance. In 2009, the industry saw the release of second generation SAS products that support 6Gb/s twice the data rate of traditional SAS. High-performing and interoperable 6Gb/s SAS products are the latest innovation in the storage industry and the most robust technology available today. In addition to increased system throughput, the benefits of 6Gb/s SAS include: Compatibility with existing 1.5Gb/s SATA and 3Gb/s SAS/SATA products providing investment protection Support for standardised zoning, which enables partitioning of a domain into smaller sets of accessible devices 6Gb/s SAS multiplexing that enables a single link to be shared by two 3Gb/s SAS or SATA drives allowing you to take full advantage of 6Gb/s throughput Support for self-configuring expanders, which simplifies the deployment of larger and more complex storage topologies The new SAS interface is technically more robust than current interface technologies. When it comes to system performance, the benefits of 6Gb/s SAS technology can be seen in applications which aggregate multiple components, resulting in higher bandwidth for the whole system. Storage-intensive, high I/O applications such as video streaming, backups, large databases, high online transactions and virtualisation are likely to benefit from the higher throughput of storage and other system devices. So its time to ask yourself if your environment needs greater system throughput; improved zoning; enhanced diagnostics; multiplexing; and spread spectrum clocking (SSC), which are just some of the benefits of 6Gb/s SAS.

At the forefront of the transition to the 6Gb/s SAS interface, HP is one of the first companies to announce an end-to-end 6Gb/s SAS storage infrastructure including 6Gb/s SAS drives, Smart Array RAID controllers, HP ProLiant G6 servers and the new HP StorageWorks D2000 Family of 6Gb/s SAS Disk Enclosures. The 6Gb/s SAS infrastructure enables you to increase productivity as well as application efficiency by accelerating data transfer between server and storage systems.

Utilise the latest 6Gb/s SAS technology to improve productivity by doubling system bandwidth from traditional 3Gb/s to 6Gb/s environments. Reduce system downtime and the chances of system saturation caused by I/O bottlenecks. Get more out of your applications: Rely on the speed of 6Gb/s SAS, which is especially useful in storage-intensive and high I/O environments Gain access to critical business data faster with a higher data transfer rate Gain the best return for your budget by reducing the total cost of ownership by: Enabling backwards compatibility with the new 6Gb/s hard drives and Smart Array controllers in existing 3Gb/s and SATA environments. Providing investment protection with the HP modular storage platform, which allows you to purchase only what they need today and add storage capacity as required. If you are looking to take advantage of the interoperable, high-performing, cost-effective 6Gb/s SAS solutions, here are some factors to keep in mind. All the components of a storage subsystem hard drives, controllers, server backplane and storage arrays should operate at the same data transfer rate or the system bandwidth will negotiate down to an acceptable level that accommodates the slower components.

Benefits of HP 6Gb/s SAS product

The new HP 6Gb/s SAS architecture offers enterprises a number of advantages, including reduced system downtime as a result of I/O bottlenecks and faster access to business-critical data. Higher system throughput: 6Gb/s SAS offers higher data transfer rates between drives and other devices when compared to 1.5Gb/s and 3Gb/s SATA and SAS drives. This means more system bandwidth for multi-device environments and fewer system bottlenecks than traditional 3Gb/s SAS systems. Flexibility: HP offers a broad range of compatible options, providing you with the flexibility to expand your environment while protecting past investments. Our Universal Drive Strategy means HP Enterprise drives are compatible with past generations of drives and servers/storage enclosures. The new 6Gb/s SAS drives and Smart Array controllers are compatible with 3Gb/s SAS drives and 1.5Gb/s and 3Gb/s SATA drives, so you have the flexibility to instal SAS or SATA drives or a combination of both in the same enclosure. Additionally, the backward compatibility of Smart Array controllers from one generation to the next makes it easy to rapidly upgrade your system from 3Gb/s SAS to 6Gb/s SAS. As the data is automatically recognised from one generation of Smart Array to the next generation, a complete backup and restore does not have to be done. The 6Gb/s SAS solutions offer direct attach, external expansion storage suited for application environments in small to medium sized businesses, remote offices and departmental locations. These innovative solutions double the system bandwidth of traditional SAS systems from 3Gb/s to 6Gb/s and allows you to: Squeeze every bit of productivity out of your HP ProLiant G6 server environment: Take advantage of the technology advances provided by the HP ProLiant G6 server line like getting more done with half the servers, reducing power consumption and enhancing virtualisation potential.

Ideal environments
Storage-intensive applications, such as large databases and high-transaction applications, where performance is key, will benefit from the increased system throughput of 6Gb/s SAS. Examples of other I/O-heavy applications include: Video streaming Virtualised servers Real time back-ups Online transaction processing Email Enterprise Resource Planning (such as SAP, PeopleSoft) Customer Relationship Management

About the 6Gb/s SAS line-up

The 6Gb/s SAS drives provide high capacity storage and high data availability with 2.5-inch 7.2K Midline, as well as 10K and 15K Enterprise drives product capacities from 72GB to 500GB. HP Smart Array

controllers allow customers to deploy several different RAID levels. They also offer features such as capacity expansion on storage arrays, mirror splitting and recombining, as well as online drive flashing that support both internal and external drives. When used with an HP ProLiant G6 server with a 6Gb/s SAS-enabled backplane and 6Gb/s SAS drives, customers will achieve improved system throughput that allows for faster access to business data and reduced I/O bottlenecks in multi-device systems. The new HP StorageWorks D2000 Family of 6Gb/s SAS Disk Enclosures provides small and medium sized businesses with direct attach and external storage expansion. It can also be used as back-up storage, a large database or for Web 2.0 installations and other storage-intensive applications for larger enterprise customers providing extreme versatility.

6Gb/s SAS drives

With storage requirements growing and becoming more complex factors such as flexibility, performance, increased reliability, greater density, security, scalability and accessibility are more critical than ever. The HP product of new 6Gb/s SAS drives meets all these demands. HP is transitioning its SAS Enterprise and SAS Midline products to 6Gb/s speeds and traditional 3Gb/s SAS drives will be discontinued in 2010. This latest technology allows for more system bandwidth in environments where the HBA/storage controller, drive and server backplane all operate at 6Gb/s speeds.
