GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

What is Global Connections? The Wisconsin Union Directorate Global Connections Committee is a volunteer organization that any UW student or staff member with interest can participate in! The committee strives to foster awareness of global issues and opportunities to students and staff here at UW-Madison through our fun and informative programming. We hope to build friendship, encourage creativity and leadership, and create dialogue between domestic and international members of the campus community. The objective of our programs is to generate international interest and increase knowledge and understanding of people around the world in a fun and welcoming environment at the Union. What is the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD)? WUD is the student programming board for the Wisconsin Union. It is comprised of nine committee directors, plus four Union officers and the Hoofer Council president. This collaborative body coordinates the work of the committee and clubs, reviews budgets, and makes policy recommendations to its governing body, the Union Council. Through their programs, each committee director supports the mission of the Wisconsin Union, making lifetime connections to the campus, one person at a time, to help achieve the overall vision of the Wisconsin Union, to be the heart and soul of a great university. General Associate Director Expectations Associate Director positions require a time commitment and carry with them numerous responsibilities and expectations. Expectations and duties for all Associate Directors include the following: Must be enrolled as a UW-Madison student for the 2012-2013 academic year. Willingness to commit at least 8-10 hours per week to the position with a need for a flexible schedule. Attend Committee and Associate Director Meetings and hold regular office hours weekly. Assemble and coordinate a team to help carry out duties specific to your position and chair subcommittee meetings. Ensure continued active involvement of committee members in all aspects of relevant program planning through training, sharing resources, and delegating tasks. An eagerness to actively provide diversity within WUD through a wide range of programs that serve the needs of the student body and the campus community. A commitment to work with committee volunteers, Union staff, campus groups, and other organizations to provide programming consistent with the goals, strategies, and philosophies of the Wisconsin Union organization. Actively participate in planning and promoting WUD Art and WUDwide events as a whole beyond individual area responsibilities. Assist other Associate Directors and committee members when help is needed (especially with advertising and recruitment) Create an adequate binder of detailed program information and training materials for next years Associate Director.

Position Specific Associate Director Descriptions

International Conversation and Coffee Table (ICCH) Associate Director Previous experience is not necessary for this position; we are mainly looking for someone enthusiastic, responsible, and punctual. The candidate must also have a readiness to evaluate and revamp the program.
Purchase and monitor needed supplies (coffee, tea, sugar, cups, cookies, etc). Set-up, clean-up and run ICCH every Friday. Foster relationships with co-sponsors in International Student Services, Madison Friends of International Students, and other international organizations

Attend weekly Global Connections meetings and hold general office hours Promote ICCH and other Global Connections programs Work with Global Connections Director to offer general support and plan additional activities and events for the committee Actively pursue co-sponsorships with ISS, MFIS, University Housing, GUTS, and the campus community Plan and implement ICCH so that it encourages awareness, understanding, respect for, and celebration of various cultural groups in the U.S. and abroad

World Cultures Associate Director Previous experience is not necessary for this position, we are mainly looking for someone with a knowledge of multicultural organizations and an eagerness to develop relationships and co-sponsorships with those organizations.
Organize cultural education programs, which may include but are not limited to Taste of Cultures and workshops. If necessary, be event coordinator for a series of evens. Work with Global Connections Director and ADs to plan additional activities and events for the committee, as well as determine shared responsibilities. Train and enable committee members in procedures and policies of the Union while growing their leadership skills Find participants, volunteers, and appoint coordinators for aspects of the fair and GC programs, especially event coordinators Foster relationships with cosponsors internationally focused organizations Promote international and multicultural awareness to the local community Plan and implement programs that encourage awareness, understand, respect for and celebration of various cultural groups in the U.W. and abroad

Innovative Programming Associate Director Previous experience Is not necessary for this position. We are mainly looking for someone with fresh ideas and a passion for programming!
Develop innovative program ideas for the Committee beyond the traditional events Coordinate any special events and field trips of the Committee. Collaborate with Marketing Associate Director to coordinate marketing plans, create flyers, etc., to publicize events and attract new members. Stay up to date with other multicultural events in the community with which to become involved. Encourage the committee to attend events outside of Global Connections. Work with Global Connections Director and ADs to plan additional activities and events for the committee, as well as determine shared responsibilities. Work with Central Reservations and Madison venues to provide the best location for each event

Marketing Associate Director An excellent eye for design and aesthetics will be crucial for this position. Experience with graphics editing programs is necessary.

Create posters for WUD and Union Marketing Routes, fill out free publicity forms, send emails, create and manage facebook groups, etc. Create, follow, and implement set list of marketing strategies for each event (i.e. ads, flyering, chalking,etc.) Update committee website weekly with upcoming and ongoing events Assist Director with committee recruitment efforts and events, add new members to database/list serve Develop ways to involve committee members in all facets Meet regularly with advisor and Global Connections Director, as well as work closely with director and other ADs to determine shared responsibilities. Work with Director and ADs to facilitate and plan additional activities and events for the committee
