To install the Symbolic Math Toolbox for use with MATLAB, you must either still have the

Mathworks installation directories on your local disk or be connected to a School of Engineering data network in Featheringill, Jacobs, Olin or the portions of Stevenson Center building 5 that are VUSE spaces. If you are going to access the installation materials from the TransIT file server, we recommend that you use a hardwired connection. There are EIGHT steps. All eight steps below should be performed using an account with "Administrator" privileges on the local computer. You will need to obtain the incremental PLP (Personal License Password) for Symbolic Math Toolbox from your CS 103 instructor. 1. If you still have the Mathworks installation directories on your local disk from when you installed MATLAB, proceed to step 2. To copy the files from the TransIT file server, use Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows Explorer or the "Start|Run" dialogue window (on the Start Menu as "Run...") to visit \\transitfs\matlab You will be asked for a username and password. Use

* your VUnet username * a password composed of - your firstname initial (in lowercase) - your lastname initial (in lowercase) - a hyphen ('-') - the last 5 digits of your VUnet ID number (which is usually, but not always, your United States Social Security number) Note: in some circumstances, instead of just "<username>" (where "<username>" is your VUnet username), you may need to specify "transitfs\<username>" in the username/password dialogue window. If, after a failed attempt, Microsoft Windows replaces the "<username>" you typed with "<othername>\<username>" (where "othername" is your computer or Microsoft domain name), you should replace "<othername>" with "transitfs". Use Windows Explorer (Right-click Start Menu and select 'Explore'), to copy the "win32.zip" file to your local hard drive. 2. Run "setup" from the drive and directory where you have the installation files. If you copied the "win32.zip" file as instructed in step 1, then within Windows Explorer, double-click the downloaded "win32.zip" file so that Windows Explorer will display the contents of the ZIP file. Change directories to the "mathworks_2007a" directory. Double-click "setup" (setup.exe) - the installer will copy files for a while and then ask for you to "Install" or "Update license". Verify that 'Install' is selected, and click 'Next'.

3. Provide License Information a. In the "License Information" dialog window, verify that your real name is in the "Name:" field and "Vanderbilt University" is in the "Organization:" field. b. Still in the "License Information dialog, enter the incremental PLP for the Symbolic Math toolbox in the PLP field which you obtained from your instructor. The incremental PLP is the c. Click 'Next'. d. In the "License File" dialog, enter the path to the Symbolic Math toolbox license file (license.dat) which you obtained from your instructor. e. Click 'Next'. f. Accept the terms of the license agreement by selecting the 'Yes' radio button, then clicking 'Next'. 4. Select the "Typical" (complete) installation type. 5. Accept the default destination directory for installation. 6. Start installation by clicking 'Install'. 7. When the installation completes, select 'Finish'. NOTE: This is NOT the last step. Most people who have trouble have forgotten to come back and do step eight. 8. After the installation completes and for the Symbolic Math Toolbox to function correctly, exit MATLAB, and copy the license.dat file that you obtained from your instructor into the following directory: C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2007a\bin\win32
