Choir Composition Project

Purpose: The purpose of the project is to help develop your musical ear, and to give an informal introduction to the theory behind a cappella music. The most important purpose of the project is to encourage the development of blend and teamwork. The better the bonds within the members of a choir, the easier it is to listen to each other and create music. Task: Your task for the next 3-4 weeks is to, as a group, create an arrangement of already existent piece. This doesnt mean you can just take a choir arrangement of a song and learn it. I want you to explore the range of your talent! The song can be any style and any genre. It doesnt even have to have words! You could choose to make a vocal arrangement of a strictly instrumental piece! (If you choose to do that, I can show you some examples for you to listen to for help) Requirements: 1. Your arrangement must utilize all members of the group. Everyone must have a part. 2. Once you have chosen your piece, bring it to Mr.C for approval. 3. The arrangement must be at least 1 minute in length if arranging an instrumental piece, and must contain at least ONE verse and ONE chorus if arranging a song with text. 4. Make sure the arrangement has a beginning, and a clear and definite end. 5. The arrangement DOES NOT have to be entirely a cappella. You are allowed the use of ONE instrument, subject to approval by Mr.C. 6. The arrangements do not have to be transcribed (written down), however, if you have the means and the desire to, by all means go ahead! Rehearsal: All Fridays in March are open for help. I know most people will be at jazz band rehearsals, but other members of the group are welcome to ask for direction. The bulk of your rehearsal will be done on your own. This means setting up times to meet as a group. These will be presented AFTER spring break, so you also have that week to work on it, but please dont leave it all until then. I will make myself available for groups who want some direction before choir rehearsals (so from 11:29 11:45), as well as in the

mornings if you ask me far enough in advance. Choir rehearsals on March 19th and March 20th will be divided up into slots for each group to have time with Mr.C before the break. These will be presented on April 4th at 11:50 (subject to change).

Notes: Because there is no mark for this, other schoolwork (or credit coursework for grade 9s), take precedence over this project. If youre having trouble finding a song, look for songs with lots of layers. There are 2 types of vocal arrangements: o The first type is a group arrangement, where the melody is shared throughout the parts, or it is a soli. o The second type is a solo arrangement with back up vocals or instrumentation. If you choose this type of arrangement, please make sure that the soloist (or soloists) is/are chosen democratically. Keep in mind I would like to showcase some of these at our concert, so put at least a little effort into them. HAVE FUN! Dont stress about it too much. This is meant to be a fun learning experience.
