VJB VINEYARD & CELLARS open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., coffee bar opesn at 7 a.m. 9077 Sonoma highway Kenwood, cA 95452 (707) 833-2300 \ www.vjbcellars.com
After years in the planning, as well as the execution, VJB Vineyard & Cellars have opened their new hospitality complex that is sure to become an incredibly popular destination in the Kenwood section of the Sonoma Valley. The brand new Tuscan-influenced complex includes a daily tasting room, a deli and marketplace, an outdoor kitchen, a beautiful courtyard, as well as a stand-alone barrel room to be utilized exclusively for wine club members, VIPs and select special events, and all of this makes you feel like you left the Sonoma Valley and arrived in a small Italian village. Tables and chairs, fountains, great wines and the aroma of food from the deli and outdoor kitchen, plus a variety of coffees (the coffee bar opens at 7 a.m.) as well as the chocolate and gelato bar, welcome visitors to VJB. It will be very difficult for a guest to come in and just do a tasting, says Henry Belmonte, president of VJB Cellars. I believe they will stay a while and enjoy the surroundings, which is why this complex was designed. It is a unique space. The courtyard is the heartbeat of the operation, where the blood flows! First and foremost, our new facility was built for the community, says Henry. Our neighbors are very important to us and we want them to all feel very welcome here. Our philosophy is that we treat everyone, locals and tourists alike, like we want to be treated ourselves. We dont know any other way to conduct our business! And that philosophy carries over to the entire staff of tasting room hosts, the deli staff, the chefs, the maintenance staff, everyone affiliated with VJB. We are all about the total experience and our new facility is all about providing our neighbors and guests with that

PETER PRAGER
Making Wines Few Winemakers Dare Attempt
BY JoSh Stein
PRAGER WINERY & PORT WORKS open by appointment only, daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 1281 lewelling lane St. helena, cA 94574 (707) 963-7678 | www.pragerport.com
Visited the Prager Winery today. Came all the way from Pennsylvania. All the wines we tasted were outstanding and our host was extremely gracious. Well definitely be back.
Phil M.
Imagine being a teenager and being told your fathers midlife crisis was relocating the family from Orange County to the Napa Valley, where through perseverance and effort by the whole family, the creation of some of the finest New World ports was the result? Sounds like the makings of a movie, right? Well, actually, welcome to just the start of the story that is Peter Pragers thirty-five years in the wine business. Napa is world-known for its winemakers dry wines; however, almost no one has turned those techniques to producing the same kind of range of sweet wines except for Jim and now Peter Prager, that is, who have used that same fine winemakers eye for detail but applied in a different fashion, honoring the tradition of long-lived, long-aging, always-representative-of-thevintage port wines. And not just with one or two. How about six, ranging from dry to off-dry to sweet, displaying the ability of port wines to pair with a wide range of cuisines. Jim Pragers first crush took place in an 1865-built carriage house on their property in south St. Helena. Their first releases were Cabernet, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and the Noble Companion Cabernet Port all 120 cases of it in 1979. To this day, everyone at the winery is a Prager by birth or marriage, and while Generation One is now comfortably retired, Generations Two run all aspects with Three all twenty-two of them quickly growing in the wings. The General Manager is brother Jeff; brother John manages the tasting room and the winerys distribution. Sister Mary coordinates the wine club, and her husband, Richard, is Cellar Master. Sister Katie is CFO, and brother Peter is winemaker. Peter himself went to Frenso State for his degree in enology, finishing just as Jim was stepping back from his responsibilities in 1995. Peter makes a range of wines beyond the norm, not just for Napa wine but for North American wine. Now available are three table wines and six ports, presenting the full array of whats possible with this winemaking philosophy, though each is no more than about eight hundred cases of production. The long-aging Royal Escort Port (and the only released in special years Royal Escort Vintage Port) is made from Petite Sirah, and the Noble Companion Tawny Port, aged for more than a decade in oak, is ready for drinking right away. The Tomas Port is made from the Portuguese varietals Tinto Cao, Touriga and Tinta Roriz, which are almost never seen in California. Going even further into rare production territory, the Aria White Port is made from Chardonnay, and the Alyssa Golden Dry Port you read that right is made from the white Verdelho grape. The still wines are equally out of the ordinary: Petite Sirah and two late-harvest Rieslings, the fruity and crisp Sweet Claire and the lightly fortified Madeline. As Im sure you can tell, the Prager wines are unlike anything in the Valley, and the Prager tasting experience is beyond the norm, too. I dont want to give everything away, but several totally unique tasting room displays await visitors, as does explanation of the fortification process and how and why the Pragers produce the least sweet ports in California. Believe it or not, its possible to produce dry and off-dry ports, but you have to visit the winery to find out the secrets of this process from the makers themselves. I will say this: bring a bill or two of local currency with you; it will add to the ambiance and the experience of talking to the family about their wines. Do yourself a favor and step off the beaten path just south of St. Helena youll be glad you did. Enjoy!

Wine Tasting in
SUISUN VALLEY
Visit Vezr Family Vineyards
Vezr Family Vineyards is one of the more picturesque and inviting of the Suisun Valley wine region. Owned by the famously friendly and welcoming Frank and Liz Vezr, the winery is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of their more well-known neighbors over the hill. With a climate that boasts of sun-drenched days and sweet foggy nights, the grapes of the Vezr Family Vineyards enjoy near perfect growing conditions. Their winery is best known for the luscious Petite Sirah that they produce, as well as their hearty, fruit-forward Zinfandel and a little known, but magnificent blend, La Salette. While lacking the big name appellation, these wines are by no means also-rans. In fact, the region is rated as the oldest and best in the State of California by the U.C Davis University. These are seriously good wines. The Vezr Family Vineyard tasting room is located in the tiny village of Mankas Corners. The town was originally established by a local miner in 1846. Hints of its old west history can be seen in the old general store and surrounding buildings. The tasting room is open seven days a week and no appointment is necessary. The ten dollar tasting fee is waived with a wine purchase. But, to really get the most out of your visit, opt for their VIP Barrel Blend Tour. At a bargain price of $35, this tour is well worth the extra investment.

JUDDS HILL open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by advance appointment 2332 Silverado trl napa, cA 94558 (707) 255-2332 | www.juddshill.com
Judds Hill Winery is right off the Silverado Trail, a short drive from downtown Napa. The winding drive in is breathtaking as you pass the vineyards. It is a family and dog friendly tasting room that is relaxing, fun, hip and cool. So whether you are a serious wine connoisseur, or just looking to do some wine tasting, Judds Hill is a perfect winery to visit. Their indoor tasting room is comfortable and intimate. There is a large table for guests to taste their current releases along with a selection of limited edition wines only available at the winery or through their wine club. Its clean, modern and contemporary with lots of natural light, but small enough to enjoy a very private seated tasting. Artwork created by winery founder Art Finkelstein lines the walls and makes it feel very casual. As the season heats up, there are two patio areas for tastings which are set apart and shaded so you can take in their scenic grounds. Judds Hill is owned and operated by two generations of the Finkelstein family. While his parents Art and Bunnie founded the winery, Judd, along with his wife, Holly, are still dedicated to making premium handcrafted wines. Guests really feel the connection to a family run operation. Most days you can find Judd in the bottle blending camps or tasting rooms. Taking an intimate and personal approach to winemaking, they limit their annual production to less than 3,000 cases. Being a wine club member here has its advantages. Members enjoy their exclusive small lot wines and great release parties and other seasonal events. Check out their website for a list of their latest events at www.juddshill.com. If you are looking for a wine adventure, then sign up for their Bottle Blending Day Camp. There are several options available depending on how many finished bottles you would like to create. Guests will work with a Blending Guide to blend their perfect Bordeaux-style wine from four barrel samples (two Cabernet Sauvignons, one Merlot and one Cabernet Franc). Once you have decided on a final blend, you will get to hand bottle, cork and label your bottles. Your personally blended wine will be sent home with you the same day! So whether you come to Judds Hill for a personal wine tasting or to enjoy one of their great events, you will enjoy spending an afternoon here sipping exceptional wine from a family run winery.

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS
open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 3522 Silverado trail north, St. helena, cA 94574 1-800-622-2206 | www.rombauer.com
Rombauer Vineyards is one of those wineries everyone knows, if it says Rombauer on a bottle, you can be guaranteed high quality, soulful wines to go with food, bringing enjoyment to all who partake. The Rombauer philosophy is the Joy of Wine crafting releases meant to pair with meals, echoing great-Aunt Irma Rombauers belief that the joy of life is the pursuit of what is best to taste and enjoy. Now at year thirty-two, and known for decades as a Napa Valley must visit, its clear to see and taste that theyve found a winning formula. How? By keeping the emphasis on what matters: drinkable wines and an enjoyable experience the food and the people matter most, not the attitude! The winery itself is on the north end of the Silverado Trail, giving a fun drive and showing off glorious views and uncrowded experiences on the road less travelled. The hilltop winery and tasting room, looking out over the heritage Zindandel vineyard visitors drive through along the way, are built over more than a miles worth of caves dug into the hillside. Picnic tables and a trellised gazebo confirm what matters most: relaxed enjoyment. Tastings are available daily at three separate tasting bars in the tasting room, as is the self-guided garden stroll through the more than one hundred plant and flower species, and the views of the Mayacamas are photo-worthy, for sure. Two different flights, current releases and proprietary, winery-only releases await. The wines are just as much a standout as the views, and fitting in with their m.o., the Rombauers really have thought through the logistics of pairing wine and food, not just in terms of varietals but also in offering multiple bottle sizes, ranging from 375 millimeter half-bottles, to the standard 750 bottle we all know so well, to 1.5-liter magums and even larger formats for occasions requiring something extra special. What awaits is their Carneros Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandels, vineyard-select Cabernets and Le Meilleur du Chai the best of the cellar. There are also two terrific sweets, a Zinfandel Port and the Late Harvest Chardonnay known simply and unsurprisingly as Joy. Visitors in search of the real Napa experience need look no further. Theres a reason the name Rombauer brings such great associations; come taste for yourself and find out why youll be glad you did. Enjoy!

Long before Napa was world famous, wine country had its intrinsic appeals: a slow pace of gradual movement, an appreciation for the Valleys environs, working with and not against nature. That feeling of connectedness is what ZDs tasting room and various tasting experiences are designed to let you feel for yourself. ZD stands not only for its founders initials but also for Zero Defects, which aptly describes not just the wines but the time spent at this perfect place in the heart of the Silverado Trail. Norman deLeuze, and partner, Gino Zepponi the ZD in ZD Wines were two aerospace engineers with a love of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay who received the first new Sonoma County permit in decades when they fell in love with Carneros in the 1970s. This new winery permit allowed the multiple-generation family winery to thrive this long because they know how to take the best the Valley gives them and put it into the bottle for others to enjoy, as is evinced by the wall of awards tucked discreetly to the side in the tasting room. ZD are producers of more-than-excellent Cabernet, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir plus some very special winery-only bottlings, known as the Rosa Lee Whims, including, at various times, releases of Barbera, Malbec, Muscat Canelli, Mourvdre, Petit Sirah, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Viognier the newest is a delicious and not-to-be-missed Grenache Ros. In 1992, ZD introduced Abacus a solera-style multi-vintage blend of every ZD Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ever produced, which is held in the barrel until bottling. Every year since, a limited amount is bottled and that years new vintage Reserve Cabernet is added back to the barrels. ZD Wines offers special tours and tastings by appointment only. Weatherpermitting, the Eco Tour provides the opportunity for conversation about the ZD estate and its practices. As you walk the perimeter of the property, you are exposed to all the various ways in which ZD and its people act as conservators: organic farming, cover crops, insectiaries, owl boxes, composting and vermicomposting, use of biodiesel for all equipment, hybrid vehicles for everyone, solar panels, waste reduction, water recycling and high efficiency use, four-stage chilling to match power to task at hand, and on and on. The winery even pays employees a daily incentive to carpool! Equally, the Private Group Tasting provides a relaxed experience where groups of eight or more people can enjoy a private tasting of ZDs classic wines in the cellar, and the Cellar Tour and Tasting allows visitors to enjoy several current vintage and reserve wines with a private guided tour through the cellar and a sampling of wine maturing in the barrel. Most enjoyably, the Vineyard View Tasting provides a selection of current, reserve and library wines in crystal stemware in the eponymous room with its west-Valley-facing floor-to-ceiling windowed space and exterior deck above the crushpad at the top of the winery. From there, you can see almost all of the property as you enjoy the wines complemented by artisan cheeses and finished with a decadent chocolate truffle. Last but not least, like many others, ZD has a wine club, called First Taste, but unlike other clubs, you select what, when, and how much youd like sent. That guarantees the club members dont just feel special at the winery and makes sure there are zero defects in every shipment. And that really sums up the ZD Wines experience: everything has been tastefully and thoughtfully been considered ahead of time, guaranteeing your time is enjoyably well spent. Cheers!

Welcome to
CALISTOGA
For all of Napa Valleys world-renown as a wine-tasting destination, did you know that the valley also has one of only three Old Faithful geysers in the world? Located at the north end of the valley in Calistoga, Old Faithful makes for a fun and fascinating afternoon stop between wineries. About every 30 minutes, visitors to the geysers are treated to a firstrate show an eruption of steam and extremely hot water spraying 60 to 100 feet in the air. The term Old Faithful refers to geysers that erupt on regular intervals. Water for the Old Faithful Geyser of California comes from an underground river. When this water flows over the hot molten magma deep in the earth, it boils, expands and then collects in large cavities. Under tremendous pressure from the heat, the superheated water is forced through the fractures and erupts with an outpouring of steam followed by hot spewing water. Old Faithful is surrounded by palm trees and thick bamboo, making for a relaxing and partially shaded setting. There are picnic tables with umbrellas and a covered seating area, all with excellent views of the geyser. The gift shop is stocked with snacks such as ice cream bars, chips and a variety of drinks, or if you want to make it a lunch stop, bring in a picnic lunch from town and a bottle of wine from one of the nearby wineries! Dont miss some of the other interesting features at Old Faithful. Check out the wishing
wells that were once used as hot mineral therapy pools. Theres also an informative exhibit area on geyser eruptions and earthquake predictions, as well as a brief history of the town of Calistoga. And best of all, theres a petting zoo with Tennessee Fainting Goats, Jacobs Four Horn Sheep and Guard Llamas. Old Faithful Geyser of California is located at 1299 Tubbs Lane in Calistoga. The gift shop is a great place to find unique Old Faithful and Napa Valley themed souvenirs, including mugs, shot and wine glasses, postcards, T- shirts and sweatshirts in adult and child sizes, hats and visors, keychains, water bottles, pens and much more. Old Faithful is open daily year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $3 for kids ages six to 12 and children under age six are free.

SODA ROCK WINERY 8015 highway 128, just outside of healdsburg open daily for tasting from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. www.sodarockwinery.com | (707) 433-3303
One of Alexander Valleys newest, yet oldest wineries awaits you. Let me explain Soda Rock Winery was originally constructed back in 1869, the Alamo-like stone faade was added in 1943, but the new-and-improved Soda Rock Winery made its debut in December of 2011. This wonderful place is an eclectic blend of old-meets-new. The main building that houses the tasting bar and lounge oozes history the rough-hewn stone faade (featured front and center) outside of the building is your first clue. Once inside the large, airy tasting room and lounge, with its exposed brick walls and redwood beams, you almost expect to hear the chink-chink of spurs as cowboys and farmers mosey up to the long antique bar for a drink. The contemporary touches in and around the tasting bar and lounge include stained cement floors all throughout the structures and sleek, modern-looking buildings that house the winery and event facility. There are large pieces of art displayed around the tasting bar and a cozy sectional takes up one corner of the room. There are tables and chairs scattered about the room and stools are lined along the bar. Youll want to relax and stay a while. Looking to host a wedding, private party or corporate event? Soda Rock Winery should definitely be on your list of venues to check out! In addition to having have a licensed wedding coordinator on staff, their large event facility accommodates up to 250 people and the smaller, more intimate Vineyard Room can accommodate up to 50 people. The beautifully landscaped picnic area and surrounding grounds are also available for private events. For visitors who would like to prolong their Soda Rock experience, there are four luxuriously appointed guest suites on site as well. The main focus in the tasting bar and lounge is the wine. There are a few t-shirts and other chatchkes available, but youll want to sit down, take some deep sniffs and sips and thoroughly experience the wines they are really good! I tasted a few wines during my visit and enjoyed them all. My favorites were the following: 2009 Reserve Chardonnay, ($36) I am usually a card-carrying member of the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) club, but this classic beauty totally swayed my opinion! Mouthwatering aromas of buttered toast, vanilla and citrus delight the nose and continue as flavors in the richly textured, juicy mouthfeel. 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon The General ($50) Wow! What a gorgeous Cab! Black cherry, cassis, orange peel and spice box aromas lure the taster into a luscious mouthful of consistent flavors, which linger through the long, delicious finish.

June is the time for weddings and graduations, and its Fathers Day, too! Time to bring out the big Bordeaux in honor of the occasion. May we suggest two wines that are tailor-made for gift giving this time of year: the Burrell School Deans List Cabernet Sauvignon and the Honor Roll Merlot. If you want to laud a special graduate, how about a bottle or two of the boldly built, always in style, Valedictorian? Theres always the Extra Credit Cabernet Franc for someone who puts extra effort into everything they do: your Dad, perhaps? Poetic Cellars has Fathers Day labels for that special Dad, and you can also create a custom label for that graduate who deserves some extra recognition. Dads everywhere will love Katys 2007 Reserve Syrah, a rich, wonderfully silky and elegant wine that seduces every part of your palate and hangs around for a really long time, too. If youre looking for something more exotic, the Poetic Cellars 2007 Mourvedre is absolutely stunning right now, and if Dad loves them big, bold and fruity, theres nothing quite like the Poetic Petite Sirah. June means Vintners Festival in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a traditional time to visit the local wineries. Help us celebrate the evergrowing wine region and pay homage to its roots. The first weekend, June 2nd and 3rd, Vintners Festival will be hosted at wineries and restaurants in Santa Clara/San Mateo counties. This is also called East Side weekend. The second weekend, June 9th and 10th, the festival will be hosted at wineries and restaurants in Santa Cruz County, called the West Side weekend. Wineries participating in the Vinters Festival will be pouring from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with restaurants closing at 4 p.m. Many wineries will be pouring their wines at local restaurants for the festival as well as at their own winery locations. For a map, brochure and tickets, call the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association at (831)685-VINE (8463). You may also purchase your commemorative wine glass, which serves as your ticket to taste throughout the entire double weekend event! Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. Festival glasses may be purchased online from SCMWA.com. All Summit to Sea wineries will participate in Vintners Festival on the west side. Dancing Creek will be open Saturday, June 9, for Vintners Festival and will be sampling their new 2009 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, their fun new white blend of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Grigio, called Samba, and their Late for the Dance late harvest Zin. Kick up your heels at Dancing Creek!
On Fathers Day weekend, June 16 & 17, Amy and Paul Kemp invite you to come up to Loma Prieta Winery to enjoy the best view in the mountains, and to help celebrate the release of their new 2010 Viognier. Enjoy fresh bivalves from Bill the Oysterman and live music by our favorite local musician, Asher Stern, all weekend. Bring your dad and treat him to some Pinotage and a game of bocce ball! Or maybe hed prefer to play catch with everyones favorite German short-haired pointer, Moe!
