Robust Machine
Uncertainties in hardware and dynamics
Prepare for possible performance shortfall
Prepare to relax some relevant parameters and compensate for
the luminosity reduction by changing other parameters
To have the room for parameter changes, the luminosity for the
nominal set has been slightly lowered from TESLA param.

Low Q
Lower charge per bunch N (e.g., half) can relax
Space-charge eect in DR
Wakeeld eects in the linac
Disruption/background issues at the IP
To recover the luminosity (L nb N 2/

y y)

nb (2 for same total current) DR kicker

z (1/2. for smaller y) bunch compressor, FFS optics
y quad alignment
single-bunch params coming closer to the X-band
5

Large Y (Larger sopt size at IP)

Larger vertical spot size (by larger y ) can relax
Linac emittance preservation tolerance
Final quad vibration tolerance

To recover the luminosity

x by x

Dy

severer kink eect

But also causes larger vertical angle spread background

Low P (Lower beam power)

Can relax the problems (slightly)
too short spacing (linac & DR)
average beam power
by
nb less than half
linac bunch spacing 1.5
smaller IP spot size
but causes
Larger disruption kink instability
Larger beamstrahlung

High L
If subsystems can achieve any point in the range,
Why dont we go to High Lum?
Constraint
Should not increase the linac (and DR) average current
Go to high luminosity by
smallest vertical emittance
smallest beta-x
smallest beta-y
Resulting in
Factor 2.5 higher luminosity
with severer beamstrahlung
11

A Responce from WG4

Large causes long tail of energy spectrum after beamstrahlung
(in particlar 1TeV case)
Cannot lead the tail to the beam dump
Suggested criterion
E < 0.3E0 should not contain more than 10 Watt
(10W is reached already with E < 0.13E0 with present High L)
By
relaxing x and z
and (possibly) larger bunch charge N
(partially) recover L by smaller vert. emit.
