Inviting Papers for the

Commemmorative Volume in Honour of

Fr. Paul de la Gueriviere, S.J. (Aug. 30, 1920 - Dec. 21, 2011)
Born: August, 30, 1920 Entered the Society of Jesus: September 07, 1941 Ordained: March 23, 1956 Final Profession: February 02, 1960 Attained Eternal Rest: December 21, 2011 Fr. Paul de la Gueriviere, S.J., affectionately called paul g, who inspired many young and old by his consistent commitment to the cause of the marginalised, is no more. He was born on August 30, 1920, and breathed his last at 8:30 p.m. on December 21, 2011. He was laid to rest the next day at 5:00 p.m. at Beschi Illam at Dindigul Tamilnadu. Paul Gs death is an irreparable loss not only to South Asia but to the whole Society and it will not be easy to fill the vacuum left by him. A French by birth but an Indian by choice, Paul G. visited his home country only once during his 65 years in India. He was a true friend, guide and a philosopher, on whom one could count. He was an inspiration to one and all. Though, quiet and shy, Paul G. vigorously accompanied the AICUF movement and AICUFERs in his younger days in Tamilnadu, in their quest of meaningfulness in life. A self-taught person, Paul G. was a voracious reader and always encouraged rigor in research in order to bring a ray of hope in the lives of millions of less privileged of our society. His social analysis sessions were well appreciated by his students. A Madurai Jesuit, Paul G. spent the best part of his life in both the Indian Social Institutes (ISIs) in Bangalore and Delhi, where he also played the role of a catalyst of social change and new ventures to read the signs of the times and make structural adjustments to enable effective civil society interventions for a better world.

He was instrumental in holding on to the original vision and mission of ISI Delhi, motivating the younger generations to go beyond the ordinary and the immediate. He also enabled people to critique the anti-people policies and programmes and respond to the hopes and struggles of the common masses. Paul G. was the true conscience of the Indian Social Institute. In his death we have lost a saint, scholar, gentleman, visionary and a missionary. His spirit, however, still lives amidst us inspiring and challenging us to continue his legacy of rigor and apostolic aggressivity in whatever we are engaged. In order to honour this Great man, both the ISIs (Delhi & Bangalore), in collaboration with many of his friends and well-wishers, both in his mother Province Madurai and in other parts of South Asian Assistancy, have decided to bring out an edited volume on the themes that were close to Paul Gs heart. The proposed volume can be tentatively divided into the following three parts: Part-I: Paul Gs Life and Message Part-II: Issue-based Themes 1. Neo-Liberal Globalisation and the Impact on the Marginalised 2. Violation of the Rights of the Marginalised and Response of the Civil Society 3. Emerging Indian Scenario and the Rights of the Marginalised These over-arching themes cover various issues on a large spectrum and there is still room for broadening the scope if necessary. Part-III: Some of Paul Gs important Writings
List of proposed authors: Paul Gs associates at ISI Delhi and Bangalore Paul Gs friends and admirers with AICUF connections Paul Gs friends not associated with the above institutions

Paul Gs birthday falls on 30th August but we will have to rush if we want the release of the book on the same day. I suggest that we have the release of the book on Paul Gs First Death Anniversary. On his Birth Anniversary in 2012, other events like Guest Lecture Series and release of other minor publications can be held at various places. Thanks everybody for cooperation!
