Asia Pacific broadband market continues strong growth trend

The Asia Pacific region continues to be the powerhouse of the global broadband market with total subscriptions in the region reaching 234.4 million at 2Q11 (see fig. 1), up from 201.8 million at 2Q10, with the market set for continued strong growth with plenty of potential for significant future growth in the mega markets of China and India.
At 2Q11 the Chinese market had reached a total of 135.1 million fixed broadband subscriptions, representing a total household penetration of just 28.6%, with very high penetration levels in the big cities on the eastern seaboard but far lower rates of broadband penetration in the western regions of the country. Meanwhile, over in India the potential for future broadband growth remains enormous with the market reaching just 5.6% household penetration at 2Q11 with total broadband subscriptions of just 12.8 million although the pending launch of nationwide Broadband Wireless Access services should significantly spur market growth. For its part Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts that total Chinese broadband subscriptions will reach 259.9 million by end-2016 (see fig. 2), which will see total household penetration increase to 49.3%, and that India will see total household subscriptions increase to 36.8 million at end-2016, taking total household penetration to 14.5%. Informa forecasts that the substantial growth from China and India over the 20112016 period in addition to strong growth in other key regional markets such as Indonesia and Vietnam will see total broadband subscriptions in the Asia Pacific region increase from 251.7 million at end-2011 up to 416.1 million at end-2016. Over the 2011-2016 period Informa predicts that the Asia Pacific region will increase its share of the total global broadband market from 41.6% to 46.9% (see fig. 3), comfortably ahead of its nearest rivals in Western Europe and North America.

Tony Brown, Senior Analyst, Informa Telecoms and Media

FIG. 3: GLOBAL BROADBAND MARKET SHARE BY REGION, 2011-2016

The technology trends

Although Asia Pacific is rightly lauded as the most advanced FTTH/B market in the world the reality on the ground is that DSL remains by far the most utilised access technology in the region and is likely to remain in that position for quite some time to come.
Indeed, at 2Q11 DSL subscriptions in the region reached 153.9 million, up from 134.2 million at 2Q10, whilst over the same period FTTH/B subscribers have increased from 47.1 million to 57.5 million (see fig. 4). Although FTTH/B take-up is likely to remain strong in the advanced markets of South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore and there will also be substantial FTTH/B growth in China where major cities are already seeing extensive FTTH/B rollout there is also the potential for strong DSL growth in other major markets in the region. There remains strong DSL potential in the Chinese market, especially in western cities, whilst there is also plenty of room for more DSL subscribers to be added in other major markets in the region such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and even in India, although the Indian market will ultimately be dominated by wireless broadband services, delivered by 3G and 4G technologies.
