Youll never walk alone

"Youll never walk alone"

when you walk through a storm
keep your chin up high
and don't be afraid of the dark.
When you walk through a storm
keep your chin up high
and don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm
is a golden sky
and the sweet, silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,

though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,
and you'll never walk alone,
you'll never walk alone.

A successful career in finance should be supported by a solid quantitative background.
Thus through college, I have actively participated in numerical trainings. My hard work
has been rewarded by my outstanding performance in various national and
international mathematical modeling contests. During the intense competitions, I not
only polished my quantitative skills by extensive reading and acquired profound
knowledge in mathematics, physics, computer science and economics, but also
developed my application skills to bridge knowledge and practice. Moreover, in the
Interdisciplinary Contest for Modeling (ICM), by INFORMS, MAA, SIAM, etc, I
successfully modeled the dynamic Bolinao ecological marine system. I flexibly used a
wide scope of methods to overcome the difficulties encountered, including the usage
of the Support Vector Machine for data screening, and the modeling of the physical
dynamic system by using PDE, which I later found to be great modeling tools in both
science and financial pricing. I was further stimulated by an academic paper by
Professor Sprott, Dynamic modeling of happiness, which used the PDE to model
human beings psychological motions. It built my intuition and confidence to model
either physical or abstract things around me. In addition to modeling contests, I have
also participated in research involving heavy modeling and published several English
and Chinese academic papers, including one international conference paper about
pedestrian simulation and another on the mathematical analysis of Chinas stock index.
With all those fruitful experiences in the quantitative fields, I am confident that I have
the solid analytical background essential for financial engineering.
I am also confident in my capability to manage advanced study, which stems from my
exceptional skills in computational and scientific research. I have participated in
several academic research projects during college and have acquired pioneering
scientific and engineering perspectives. One remarkable example is the Feature
Selection from Gene Expression Profile in the Data Mining and Pattern Recognition
Laboratory, where I applied many front statistical and computational theories, such as
Random Forest theory, to the building of a categorizer, which is the core part of the
research. I am ready to leverage these advantages in my future studies in financial

engineering.
Additionally, I also have built a solid foundation in economics and finance through
training from one of Chinas best academic institutions in econometrics, WISE, where I
further combined my programming ability with business theories. Exactly this is my
strong aspiration to bridge computer science and financial modeling. I was awarded
the International Second Prize for my financial engineering toolbox in a national
programming contest, in which I designed more than 100 functions such as sensitivity
analysis, fixed income analysis etc. To further perfect the toolbox, I have also
communicated with some financial corporations in China and better learnt about their
needs in financial analysis. Last but not least, I was proud to see that some of the
functions I designed are regarded to be more convenient and user-friendly than the
previous toolbox in Matlab. Excellent numerical analysis, programming skills and
derivative knowledge ensured the success of my work on this toolbox. I am convinced
that these excellent characteristics will enhance my further study and professional
development.
As a supplement to my finance education, I managed a portfolio worth $70,000 for
two and a half years most in equity. Unlike most ordinary investors, I passionately used
quantitative approaches and mathematical models, such as time series and corporate
evaluation, to make my own sound decisions. Also I overcame the problem of hedging
due to the lack of short selling mechanisms and a well-developed derivatives market
by using some highly negative correlated securities and warrants to construct a likely
hedging opportunity. I still remember one of the most successful trades using this
quantitative approach in which I reduced loss through a hedging portfolio and hedged
my position in CHINA SOUTH (600029, SH) by its put warrant (580989, SH). Finally this
portfolio yielded 23% in 10 trading days, during which CHINA SOUTH fell 16%. Besides,
I programmed some interfaces based on security trading software, which can raise the
alarm and assist me in making timely decisions. Meanwhile an internship in an
investment corporation increases my understanding and application of financial
knowledge. All those financial experiences in the real market enhanced my application
of quantitative financial theory.

Born and grown up in Tianjin, the biggest port city committed to developing modern
logistics in North China, I have been to the port with my friends to see the cargo ships
from all over the world loading and unloading merchandizes since my childhood. Thus,
I have a special feeling for harbors. As a student majoring in International Finance, I do
not take long to realize that, against the backdrop of globalization, China is actively
becoming part of the international economy and that, in the field of logistics,
important changes are taking place that will produce far-reaching implications. As a
result, I have set my life goalto be an expert in the field of supply chain
management, and I would like to devote myself to this field.
Having achieved excellent scores in National College Entrance Examinations, I was
admitted into XXXXX in September 2004, majoring in International Finance. I was
extremely interested in International Trade, International Settlement, Marketing,
International Finance, and Operational Research. A good command of these courses
provides me with a general knowledge of operating modes of international trade
system. Most of the professional courses I took are taught in English, and what I have
learnt range over global financial and trade markets, which make me familiar with the
oversea financial institutions and enterprises operating modes.
Moreover, I was not only content with performing well in examinations but also had a
point of view that study should be a process of thinking and practicing instead of just
memorizing and I should learn how to properly apply theoretical knowledge to
practice. For example, my graduation thesis is Study on the Banking System of
Developed Countries and Its Enlightenment on China. In the research, I learned that
the western banking system had undergone numerous reforms before adapting to the
new financial environment. Chinas banks must provide more efficient and excellent
services before having a strong footing in the world, and therefore should draw
successful experiences from western countries so as to change the obsolete banking
systems. Fortunately, China's banking industry has realized the fact, and quite a few
listed joint-equity banks are devoted to furnishing efficient service with the faith of
putting client first. However, China enterprises have little awareness of the importance
of logistics, causing a big gap between western countries, which directly bring about

many enterprises failure to meet the customers requirements for commodities, not
to speak of satisfying their personalized needs.
Having taken a number of specialized courses related to International Finance and
with a deep awareness of the reality of supply chain management in China, I would
like to apply for a Masters program in Supply Chain Management at your honored
University. Your university, with a time-honored history, is among the first-rate
universities in the United States to have offered an advanced program in Supply Chain
Management, noted for its original curriculum, rigorous training and a strong faculty. I
believe that your program will expose me to the mature and advanced concepts of
logistics and management and help me lay a firm foundation for my career objective.
In my future program, I will acquire the advanced knowledge about supply chain
management and introduce the knowledge into China enterprises, realizing my career
goalto be an expert who can help to turn Tianjin into a metropolis offering
integrated services such as modern logistics, shipping, and marketing information, etc.
and apply my expertise to the reform of Chinas logistics industry.

LBS Masters in Finance Application - Personal Statement
Question 1 your motivation and contribution
What has prompted your application to the Masters in Finance?
I have been thinking about applying to the MiF for five years and the reasons are
manifold.
First, I have worked in investment banking and now I am working in the private equity
industry, which is becoming more and more complicated, requiring ever more
advanced financial knowledge. Although I have done an academically oriented master
degree in economics concentrated in finance before I started working, I believe that
doing a professionally oriented master degree in finance after a few of years work
will help me understand finance better from practical perspectives. The MiF is the best
programme of its kind in the world and the curriculum is second to none in terms of
depth and practical applications, and therefore is my best choice.
Second, finance is a people business and sometimes the credibility of having
graduated from a top business school and the connection from business school can
really open doors. I have met several successful London Business School graduates
and they are all very proud of their London Business School association. Therefore, I
am sure the credibility London Business School can give me and the access to the
Schools stellar alumni will be a life-long asset to me.
Thirdly, until now all my educational and work experience has been gained in China,
and I want to add some international exposure to my experience. The London
advantage and London Business Schools truly international nature will best serve this
purpose of mine.
Why do you believe you would benefit from it at this stage in your career?

I am currently a private equity associate and I hope to make the career progress to
vice president in two years. In private equity, most associate-above professionals hold
advanced degrees from a globally reputable business school, such as London Business
School. This is the case because such degrees provide private equity professionals with
financial knowledge, managerial skills, global vision, credibility and connections
necessary for their career advancement. For this reason, I believe the MiF degree will
help me achieve my career goal at this stage as well as in the long run. Furthermore,
very recently the CEO of my firm told me that he was very satisfied about my
performance and was considering promoting me to vice president the next year. I
hope the MiF degree will also help him make this decision. More importantly, since I
already made up my decision to go to business school, I would rather do it now and
return to the firm as a vice president in ten months than get the promotion and quit
soon after that to pursue a degree.
What do you expect you could contribute to the programme?
I have 3.5 years (including internship) of experience in investment banking and 1.5
years in private equity and I have worked on various transactions including IPOs,
mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings and private equity investments. I
have transaction experience in various sectors such as banking, natural resources,
infrastructure and manufacturing. Through classroom discussion, projects and club
activities and with my practical experience in the financial industry I believe that I can
facilitate other students learning experience while learning from them.
Also, I have always been a loyal alumnus and donor of the programmes I attended
previously. Based on my interaction with MiF alumni, I like the people and the culture
of the MiF, so I believe that I will be an active alumnus of the MiF and actively seek to
promote the MiF after graduation.
Why do you want to study for a specialist Masters in Finance programme as opposed
to a more general masters degree?
First, because I am certain that I will come back to the private equity industry, even
back to my current employer, after graduation, I find a specialist Master in Finance
programme more relevant to my experience and career goals.

In addition, as I have already spent three years for a master in economics in China, I do
not find a traditional two-year MBA very attractive considering the opportunity cost.
Plus I dont need an internship to help me switch industry, which is the greatest
benefit offered by a two-year program. Therefore, for me, a more focused ten-month
programme like the MiF suits me better than a typical two-year general management
programme.

Question 2 your career goals

I chose a finance career because it is a very challenging career with high rewards. It
requires multiple skill sets and knowledge, and it is full of changes, especially for a
private equity career. As an investment professional, I am always exposed to
difference industries, difference companies and different deal structures. It is very
exciting and you never get bored.
I plan to join a global private equity firms China office immediately after graduation. I
will try to fully leverage my previous experience and connections as well as the
opportunities London Business School offers to land such a job. But I will first talk to
my firm about a return offer if I am admitted, and I may come back to my current
employer if the offer is attractive.
My short term career goal is to be promoted to vice president within two years after
graduation, and in five years after graduation I will probably have been promoted to
senior vice president/principal. And if things work out really well, I might have my own
boutique private equity firm, but of course it requires a lot of hard work.

Question 3 commitment and support

I have discussed my business school plan with XXX, my direct supervisor, and he is very
supportive and even kind enough to write a reference letter for me. Although I have
not officially brought this issue up with my employer, I am sure I will have the firms
support because most of the executives have a master degree from a reputable
business school, and they will understand my plan. Also, my firm is even thinking
about a business school sponsoring plan. I am quite confident that with my solid
performance I can secure a return offer from my employer.

I have been constantly discussing the plan with my wife and she has always been very
supportive. She plans to go to London with me and work while I study. Her employer,
YYY, has a development programme which allows her to transfer to the London office
while I study. In this way we can stay together and earn some money for my tuition at
the same time. We believe that the London experience would be even better if shared
with my dear wife.

Question 4 any other matters

I would like to reiterate my strong interests in the MiF. I first learnt about the MiF four
years ago from my former supervisor, ZZZ, who is a MiF graduate. I have since been
following the programmes development, frequenting the website, going to
information sessions and talking to many alumni. The MiFs curriculum, programme
length and student body fit me the best among all the programmes I have considered
and is definitely the top choice among the very few programmes I am going to apply
to.

Essay 1
During the past 3 years in my university, I have constructed a solid foundation for my
academic exploration. I achieved high scores on my courses, especially the basic
subjects of accountingI scored 96 in the examination of Foundation of Accounting,
93 in Micro-Economics and 96 in Foundation of Financial Management. All of these
courses are fundamental to graduate study in accounting. I maintained a high GPA
rankingtop 2 in 70 students and was awarded many honors and scholarships each
year because of my outstanding academic achievements. Besides obtaining textbook
knowledge, I earnestly performed literature research in accounting and economics to
become more well-rounded, and attended graduate-level seminars and group
discussions to keep myself abreast of the latest developments in research field. I firmly
believe that my academic record adequately reflect my ability and potential for
graduate study in accounting.
As for my GMAT score, I would say that I experienced a journey of self-discovery,
which allowed me to explore my strengths and passions. In April, 30, 2009, I took the
GMAT for the first time but only scored 650, which was much lower than what I had
expected. When I was in the elevator in the building of the GMAT Test Center, I told to
myself Every man is the architect of his own fortune. For my dream of master in
accounting, I can beat the GMAT! Soon relieved from the depression of this failure, I
arranged my review plan for the GMAT. It was very challenging for me because my
busy coursework and involvement with regular activities in students union presented
extremely high demand for my time management skills. Additionally, the stringent
GMAT test date for the second time pushed me to bring my potential in studying
capacities into full play because my final examinations were also coming at the same
time. All the related tasks, from the recitation of English words, the understanding of
the sentence grammar, the writing of the AWA, to the exercise of the GMAT sample
questions, were carried out smoothly and I knew the real arduous task was waiting for
me in not faraway place.
In August, 5, 2009, only three months after the first time I took GMAT, I went into the
GMAT Test Center and scored 740 in the Quantitative and Verbal section, ranking 97%

among all the competitors. The whole process of my GMAT experience itself is a
convincing proof of my strong capability and great potential for studying in the MSA
program as well as a clear demonstration of my good English language ability. I feel so
proud to have been part of this experienceto believe in something and to make it
happen as best as it could be.

Essay 2
Four years ago, when I chose the major for my undergraduate studies, I picked up
financial management without a second of hesitation. My dad smiled and warned me,
Youd better know what you are doing, because we already have two accountants in
our three-member family. I replied: We are different, Dad. You work for the
government, mom works for business, and I will become self-employed someday.
With my deeper understanding of accounting, I feel that exceptional professional
expertise, sharp sense of innovation and strong communication skills allow an
accountant to reach goals and consequently achieve business success. This way of
thinking served as a powerful motivator for me to seek internships to become more
career-oriented. During summer vacation in 2008, I worked with Tianjin Personnel
Exchange Center, where I acquainted myself with how to conduct selection, training
and development of employees. This experience offered me a clearer picture of a
desirable talent in modern societysensitivity and flexibility to both social and
technological changes. Half a year later, I became one of six interns in the pool of 300
applicants for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. I was offered the
prestigious chance of being trained in the Financial Center, where I took the initiative
to learn the fundamental procedures of accounting involved in banking services. The
summer of 2009 witnessed my dbut in the field of auditing. At Sanlong Certified
Public Accounts, I participated in several auditing projects while winning high praise
from my boss regarding my excellent command of English and the language of
business.
Besides the commitment to my academic work, I also engaged myself actively in social
activities. During my presidency in the Students Union, I organized the Sports Meeting
twice and the Cultural and Art Festival once. These experiences were rewarding as
they exercised my leadership and greatly enhanced my collaborative skills. During my

junior year, I initiated the establishment of an academic association, which would

serve as a platform for the students to exchange ideas with prestigious scholars and
high-level executives in the industry. It was a great challenge for me, as I had to deal
with all the organizational tasks within two weeks. The absence of previous examples
of such initiatives in the student body in our university constituted another obstacle
for me to overcome. However, with my excellent time management capacities and
efficient coordination, I managed the formation of detailed agenda and accomplished
the foundation of this association while winning high praise from my fellow students
and teachers in our school.
I now feel that earning a graduate degree in accounting will further enhance the skills I
need to achieve my goals, because I will get access to all the resources availablethe
prestigious faculty, the cutting-edge research projects, the inspiring learning
community and the highly competitive internships and social involvementto better
prepare me for the certified accountant examination and the long-range development
on the career path. I also want to further my strength in mathematics and better
utilize my cross-disciplinary background so that I can gain more adaptability in diverse
working settings. Upon graduation, I would like to gain some working experiences in
my chosen field as an auditor or financial accountant. Then I will try to seek
employment in one of the Big Four accounting Firms to sharpen my cutting edge. With
all my preparations and experiences in accounting, I will ultimately start my own
business as an independent accountant. With my professional expertise,
well-informed strength and desire to perform above expectations, I firmly believe that
I can fulfill my potential and earn an arena in modern business with my life.

When I was a high middle school student, my elder sister went to Southern California
University for her graduate study of Electronic Engineering. Four years later, Ive

I had a deep understanding of the MS in Accounting program in Katz. There is every

reason for me to choose the Katz MS program, but I would like to emphasize the
following aspects in my application.
The first and the foremost, the long tradition of innovation and academic excellence
has made Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business a perfect destination for
students to pursue an advanced degree.
Second, Katz is located in the city of Pittsburghthe second largest city in the
Pennsylvania State, the famous industrial city, and the US iron and steel industry
center, making it possible that I can have more career opportunities in Katz. And the
dynamic interaction between University of Pittsburgh and the local economy and
industry builds up a desirable platform for students to apply what they have learned,
thus bringing forth many chances to enhance my professional skills and career
aspirations.
Third, the well-balanced curricula provided are conducive to all-around training. I am
mostly attracted by the flexibility of the curricula, according to which students with an
undergraduate degree in accounting can complete the program in only two terms,
which means I have more freedom when choosing courses during my study. In
addition, the multi-disciplinary perspectives and global vision encouraged in the
innovative approach to business education can efficiently bridge students to
professionals through pragmatic involvement in academic research and internships.
Fourth, since I am committed to the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Exam, the
business and accounting credits offered by your program will constitute the admission
ticket for me.
With all the appealing characteristics listed above, MS in Accounting program in Katz
becomes to my destination. With my excellent academic achievement, past
experience and well-rounded personality, I am confident that I can be an ideal
candidate for your esteemed program.

5Peter essay
Before I embark on the Master of Science in Accountancy program at University of San
Diego, I have envisioned a clear career objective: to be a professional accountant in a
global company. My determination to become a professional accountant through
studying abroad was built as I witnessed, with Chinas globalization, the great need of
accountants with international accounting background to support Chinese companies
exploration in global markets. My determination was further strengthened during an
interview with an HR from Whirlpool about accounting treatment under US standards
instead of Chinese standards, in 2009 ACCA Job Hunting Competition. During the
conversation, I found myself lacking of background in the accounting treatment under
US accounting standards, which spurred my desire to expand my horizons with
international accounting standards outside China. Keeping this goal in mind, I have
been well preparing myself for prospective study on this topic by searching for
reference related to the global consensus accounting standards. With the future goal
in mind which is to be an accountant with international experience, I even turned
down the offer of graduate program from my school. Therefore, upon graduation from
your program, I would like to initial my career from an entry-level position in an
auditing company, especially in one of the Big Fours, so that I can gain ample
experience in various accounting and auditing aspects through projects from different
industries. Obviously, the graduate program at University of San Diego is no doubt the
best education to prepare me for my short-term career goal of being a professional
accountant.
Moreover, with my experience of a professional accountant, I can gain essential
knowledge and make full preparation for being a financial manager, which my
long-term career goal lies on. I have a better understanding of my career path through
my internship experience. I was responsible for checking entries of international
business at Shenzhen Wongga Partners Certified Public Accountants. Under my
learned senior managers instruction, I began to know some financial gains by
applying to the differences between accounting standards. During the internship I
better understood various accounting treatments involved in different accounting
standards, even some applications of trades between US and China. Finally, with
professional experience of accounting and auditing in various industries, I believe I
would go back to China and find a financial management position in a global company

where I can apply all my knowledge and experience gained abroad.

The graduate business study in accounting at USD obviously will greatly contribute to
my career goal. First of all, the master program offers a curriculum that develops my
academic interest and builds up systematic knowledge. The elective courses, such as
International Financial Analysis and Reporting, can broaden my international horizon
in accounting. Besides, small classes and interactive learning provided by the master
program will also be a great promoter in interactively developing the skills needed by
accountants and financial managers, especially technical accounting skills and
analytical ability.
In addition, I can easily receive personalized attention from accounting faculties, as
faculty mentors in USD Graduate Accountancy Program orient students to their
program of study and provide career counseling. Moreover, as your program enrolls a
diversity of students from all over the world, I will have the opportunity to understand
the culture differences among various nations, which will be a necessity to reach my
long-term career goal, finding a financial management position in a global company in
China.
