Please note that I will enforce these contracts and deduct marks but YOUR GROUP needs to speak with the individual first, in person or via e mail. Please do not allow poor productivity or tolerate excuses which encourages bad behavior. You are not helping the student in the end. Thank you.

One (1) page executive summary, single spaced, to be handed in when your group does the presentation. You may write on both sides of the single page. Please use headings to make your executive summary more readable. Please check out the proper way to do executive summaries. This is worth 10 marks. Please note that a single page means just that, the important information from your presentation needs to be summarized in one page, not on both sides of the page! In real life that is all your executive committee will have the time or the inclination to read! Description:

The purpose of the Workplace Inspection/Hazard Analysis & Health and Safety Plan is to provide an opportunity for the practical application of knowledge and skills developed during the course.
ALL members of each group are required to physically inspect an actual workplace after reading through the materials and making the necessary preparations to conduct the

It is important that all group members be physically present for the inspection. Hazard checklists and reporting forms need to be
inspection. completed, and a written report prepared. You must include a DIAGRAM of the worksite you inspected in your presentation. I also encourage you to report your findings back to the organization you are inspecting. How do I find a workplace to inspect? This can be difficult frankly. Tap into your friends, family and current work places for a suitable site. I would prefer you do not do a site at GBC as these have been all been done before. Some employers may be suspicious of this exercise or worried that you are going to contact the Ministry of Labour and report them. I am happy to speak with them and explain that this is an academic exercise and they can benefit from it as you will be prepared to share your findings and recommendations with them. Free is good!! You can also tell potential inspection worksites that strict confidentiality is maintained for this exercise around any findings!

Please note it is permissible for you to use the same workplace you did the Health and Safety policy and program report for in Assignment #1 again for Assignment #2.
Group size? Group size should be NO MORE than 6 people unless approved by me. 5 is an ideal size but depending on circumstances, which need to be reviewed with me, I will accept between 4 and 6 in a group. 3 in a group is simply too small. You are welcome to form your own groups but I will assign anyone who is unable to find a group and/or assign students to balance out group memberships. Please come to class with the group contract prepared and signed by everyone in your group. I will provide you with a SAMPLE group covenant. Please do not simply photocopy my sample and return it signed to me. I will simply give it back to you! Requirements: 1) Draw a block diagram; it does not have to be elaborate, just clear, showing the physical features of the area of inspection, adding work-flow and work processes, or other significant information as you proceed with the inspection for the class to follow along.

2) Develop an inspection checklist (it is quite permissible to use existing checklists from web sites,
Ontario Ministry of Labour, CCOHS etc.), inspection hazard reporting forms and a job hazard analysis reporting form, using course materials as examples and then tailoring it to your particular area. When assessing hazards, it will be important to analyze actual hazards, potential hazards and possible hazards while looking at existing controls: Are they in place? Are they effective in controlling the hazard? Make sure to include recommendations for control of the hazards identified, breaking them down into short-term and long-term solutions .

For one job of your choice, you are required to conduct a detailed job hazard analysis. See the text for a sample Hazard Inventory and Risk Evaluation and instructions on how to calculate this. This is important for both your report and presentation. Make sure your presentation covers this and presents your ONE sample job with a Job Hazard Risk Evaluation Table where you have evaluated each risk in a chart form and come up with a % Risk factor (see the text) and the calculation formula. I have had some groups in the past who have NOT done this table or calculations and I will mark accordingly downwards! You need to understand how to do this and it is not a complicated process.

3) Once all the inspection forms are completed, develop your findings for presentation to the class.
Occupational health and safety legislation and guidelines should be thoroughly applied. You may also incorporate research findings. Your presentation should discuss the hazards and unsafe conditions identified on the checklist, inspection hazard reporting forms and job hazard analysis

reporting form. Recommendations for prevention and methods of control must also be described. Organizational health and safety priorities should be assigned with rationale in your presentation.

4) A presentation of the report will be required by each group, playing the role of a JHSC
reporting their findings to the upper management of a firm. You have a maximum of 15 minutes for your group presentation. Please note EVERYONE in your group MUST be present for the presentation. However it is not necessary for everyone to speak given the size of the groups. See below for the DONTS for your presentation. Given the size of the class you will have a MAXIMUM of 10 minutes to present so you need to get the point! If you go overtime, I will deduct marks. Treat this presentation as if you were doing it to your boss or Board of Directors and dress accordingly. Please provide a paper copy of the slides to me just prior to the presentation which clearly indicates who was in your group on the front page/slide. Please also ensure you introduce the members of your group to the class at the beginning of your presentation. Also hand me your one (1) page executive summary at the beginning of your presentation. Please come prepared with your slides to hand to me STAPLED and ready to go. Please none of can I print this off and give it to you later!! Again make sure the full name, no first names only, and student number is included on your first slide so I clearly know who is in your group.

5) You need to rehearse your presentation!

The problem is unfortunately some groups DO NOT rehearse their presentation and it shows coming across as choppy, wooden and unfocused. Here are some pointers for your group presentations: DO NOT simply read your presentation. Use cue cards only if necessary Talk to your slides, dont simply read them out! I will deduct marks for groups with presenters who do this. Try and involve the audience in your presentation by using prizes for correctly answering questions etc. Where possible use photos of the actual worksite to illustrate your presentation Check your slides carefully! There should be NO typos on them! I will deduct marks for this. Think of it as a presentation for your supervisor at work. How would you approach this??! Vary the tone and volume of your voice so as to NOT bore the audience or put them to sleep! Speak up so people can hear you Do not mumble Do not fiddle with your hair, clothes etc. during the presentation. It is very distracting for the audience Dont lean against the wall, yawn or stare into space. Make eye contact with your audience. It is perfectly acceptable to have chairs at the front of the class, for example, which you sit in until you are called upon to speak. Watch your pronunciation. Do not make up words because you are nervous, that is why you need to rehearse, preferably in front of someone, not just in front of a mirror. You need to be able to get feedback from someone other than just yourself.

Dress for success, dress professionally.
