5. Promises of improved social and economic conditions win more support for would-be single party rulers than ideological pronouncements. How far do you agree with this claim? (Discuss with reference to Hitler and Germany) Key Issue: Rise of Hitler or Germany under Hitler (nature of his rule) Promises & win more support means that you should discuss in relation to his rise to power. Candidates may discuss the period under Hitlers rule when Germany was not under single-party rule yet. This question is worded for you to use some of the points from rise of Hitler. Also, just ignore would-be single party rulers as that is not as important in the discussion. Realisation of promises as long as you include this in your introduction, you may argue that it won/consolidated the support for Hitler. Hitlers promise to provide jobs won mass support Economic Conditions reported unemployment was 6 million but many historians predicted that it was closer to 8 million before Hitler came to power. The economic crisis was a breeding ground of unhappiness and guaranteed the rise of would-be single party rulers, thus making Hitlers rise to power inevitable. Propaganda was effectively used by Hitler and the Nazis to garner support for themselves. The Ministry of Popular enlightenment and Propaganda was set up on 12th March 1933 under Presidential decree. Appointment of Dr. Josef Goebbels as the Minister of Propaganda o With the creation of this ministry, propaganda for the Nazi Ideology became the responsibility of the state instead of the Nazis themselves, remaining less conspicuous to the public o 10th May 1933 Goebbels undertook the book-burning ceremonies and the Nazi students stripped the libraries of books o Arts as a form of propaganda o Mobilization of People through education and youth movement o Ministry formed an effective platform for the dissemination of propaganda for the Nazis, buying over many Germans with its intoxicating messages. o Schools: actions were taken to make sure that schools become a totally Nazi environment. Ideologically unreliable teachers, along with Jews, were dismissed. Teachers were indoctrinated with Nazi propaganda to ensure their complete loyalty. [Comparison: Ideological pronouncements were definitely more effective than promises.] As Hitler promised more jobs and better economic and social conditions, it can be argued that these were part of his ideological pronouncements He made the promises but had no clear blueprint for solving the economic crisis Also, he incorporated anti-communist ideology in his economic agenda, that swayed the much needed wealthy class vote Furthermore, propaganda to garner support was as important as his economic and social promises and people always looked to a certain ideology Nazism became the over-arching ideology that was encompassed reform, part of which were his economic and social promises for a greater and united Germany

Denouncement of TOV TOV placed a lot of constraints on the nation, hampering its recovery from the war.
